Cornell/Rage Split Leaves OzzFest Looking For Replacement

Yahoo! Music, Mar 26, 2002 6:00 pm PST
(3/26/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Chris Cornell's manager Jim Guerinot has confirmed to LAUNCH that the former Soundgarden frontman has left the unnamed project with former Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim C., and drummer Brad Wilk. No explanations were given by management or the combo's record company, Epic Records.

The band was booked for the forthcoming OzzFest 2002 tour. A spokesperson from Sharon Osbourne's office told LAUNCH that a replacement for the band hasn't been lined up yet. There are rumors that Tool, which is on the international leg of the OzzFest 2002 tour, was going to fill in, but a spokesperson for the band told LAUNCH that Tool has its own headlining tour planned for the summer.

While the ex-Rage/Cornell collaboration was short-lived, an album from the sessions is expected to be released this summer. Soon after the collaboration began, ex-Rage guitarist Tom Morello spoke backstage at the Grammys in 2001 about how the potentially permanent musical hook-up with Cornell went. "Unbelievably fantastic," he said. "He's one of the greatest singers and songwriters in rock history, and jamming with him was off the hook. We were just making up new, exciting rock. Chris Cornell is definitely not the singer of Rage Against The Machine, but the music that we made in the couple of days that we jammed together was really groundbreaking and fantastic, and was so exciting. He's amazing."
