NELSON, Irving T. - Of Davison, died December 15, 2010, age 79. Irving was born March 17, 1931, to Donald and Margaret Nelson, in Iron Mountain Michigan. He loved Michigan's Upper Peninsula and returned frequently throughout his life. Irving excelled academically, winning the state-wide competition for the Detroit Free Press Forensic Scholarship as a high school student. He was graduated with honors from Michigan State University (1951) and from Harvard Law School (1954). He served his country in the United States Army after law school. He then returned to Michigan to establish his law practice. On June 28, 1958, Irving married Sarah Jane Gwyn, of Flint. Together, they raised four children: Margaret, Jane, Thomas, and Patrick. He was a loving and generous husband and father. Irving possessed a formidable intellect. He read voraciously and was a knowledgeable and perceptive conversationalist in a wide variety of subjects. His interests included history, science, current affairs, sports, hunting and the stock market. He understood and appreciated good music, art, books, wine and food, especially chocolate. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, he was an avid hunter and fisherman; he shared his love for the outdoors with his children whenever possible. Irving was a skilled lawyer and an avid student of the law. He practiced law for over 50 years, primarily in Genesee County. His areas of practice included business law and securities regulation, personal injury, and general civil litigation. His clients benefitted not only from his legal knowledge and skills, but from his sense of humor and deep understanding of human nature. He represented his clients vigorously, but he would readily forgo a short term tactical advantage in the long term best interest of his client. He treated everyone involved in the legal process with courtesy and respect. Irving was a generous and loyal colleague, mentor and friend to many lawyers, judges, and others in the legal community. Irving was an ardent believer in the cause of social justice, belonging to many service organizations including the League of Women Voters, the Welfare Board of Flint and the Valley Area Agency on Aging. During his service on the Welfare Board, he was responsible for expanding the breadth of services to underserved populations, and in increasing the funding to those services from stage agencies. Among others, he was a generous supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Habitat for Humanity and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. His survived by his wife, Sarah Jane Nelson, of Davison, his four children, Margaret L. Nelson of Chicago, Jane Marie Nelson of Lansing, Dr. Thomas Edward Nelson and wife Dr. Michele Acker of Columbus, OH and their two sons, Avery Thomas and Oliver Channing, and Patrick Allen Nelson and his wife Mellissa Hasler, MSW, of Flint.
