Heritage to Auction Legendary "Pay Copy" of Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1!
DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Comics Auctions (HCA) will offer the "Pay Copy" of one of the most historically important comic books ever published, Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1, CGC-graded VF/NM 9.0, Cream to off-white pages, in their upcoming Signature Auction, to be held October 14-15, 2005, in Dallas, Texas.
"This comic, originally intended to be given away at movie theaters in 1939 as a promotional vehicle but probably not actually distributed outside of a few advance copies, is an exceptionally significant book for several reasons," said Ed Jaster, Director of Acquisitions for HCA. "To begin with, it contains the first printed, although unreleased, appearance of Bill Everett's Sub-Mariner, predating that character's true introduction later the same year in the pages of Marvel Comics #1. Secondly, this is the legendary 'Pay Copy,' in which someone, possibly publisher Lloyd Jacquet, recorded payment information for the various creators that contributed to the book. Lastly, this is currently the highest-graded copy of this important comic known to exist."
"Due to this amazing confluence of circumstances," Jaster concluded, "this is one of the most important and significant comics ever to hit the market. From a purely historical perspective, this one is hard to beat. It should cause quite a bidding frenzy among advanced collectors."
This comic carries a pre-auction estimate of $100,000.
