Off day Open Thread

So let's see, stuff to talk about today.

Games we should care about:

Colorado vs. Pittsburgh 7:05 (Kim vs. Wells)
Atlanta vs. St. Louis 7:05 (ramirez vs. Weaver)
LA vs. Arizona 9:40 (Sele vs. Gonzalez)
Philadelphia vs. San Diego 10:05 (Hamels vs. Williams)
Milwaukee vs. San Fran 10:15 (Jackson vs. Schmidt)

New off day feature, the random funny internet picture:

No idea where I got that, probably Fark, but it still cracks me up.

This off day's open question is a little different, but hopefully we'll still get some good responses.

Call this one the meet your fellow commenters off day, inspired by this.

Here are the questions:

  • Where did you grow up?
  • What high school did you go to?
  • Sports played?
  • Where do you live now?
  • Other teams you root for?
  • How did you find Red Reporter?
Alright guys, have a great Monday!

obc, you and I need to get together and trade stories about Bruce's Canoe Rental, the Whistle Stop, and playing baseball at Lever Park.  Good times.

Slyde
Best thing about Bruce's was its proximity to McCoy's carryout and the cigarette smoking/beer drinking chimp.  Lever was a crown jewel in the old neighborhood, I used to ride the Huffy to practices and games(with glove wrapped on the handlebars).

LYO ball.  Good times.  We used to hop in the back of dads pickup for the ride down West Loveland to the Creamy Whip after victories.

by ohiobobcat on Jul 17, 2006 10:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Creamy whip
About half of my 10 favorite childhood memories involve the Creamy Whip.  That place is as close as you could come to Mecca for a young LYO baller.  I always loved when we played at Lever because we had to come back past the Creamy Whip (I lived across the river, up the hill, around the corner from McCoy Park).

I was a Bill's Carry Out kid (right around the corner from Bruce's behind Bond Furniture).  That was the closest place for me to ride my bike so I could buy candy and baseball cards.  Ahh, memory lane.

Grew up in Cincinnati.
Went to St. X.
Sports:  Tennis, psychokinesis (just kidding).
Now live in New York City.
Other teams:  Bengals, Bearcats (men's basketball), Buckeyes (men's basketball and football), Spurs (and if the Spurs are eliminated, whichever team is playing a team owned by Mark Cuban).
Found Red Reporter searching for information on Reds' minor leaguers and found JD's top 40 prospects.

Alter!!! >: (
I was a Firebird myself(snif).;) But if we can put aside our petty differences, admit that Kettering was a better football team and Alter kicked Ass in basketball, we'll be fine.
Ever get out to Bee Cave? I'd put big money in the mail to get a Buster's BBQ T-shirt and a side of ribs. (sorry cinci, but The Inn doesn't hold a candle to half the roadside joints out there)

For the record, I'm now in Englewood- Home of Hal McCoy.

Googled and found Red's Daily. Lurked there for months until it moved here.

Ha!
I still have a bottle of highly coveted Salt Lick sauce in my fridge, bought at O'Hare of all places. Don't get me wrong, Salt Lick is incredible, maybe as good as Buster's, but the eat-in experience of picnic tables, red checkered plastic table-cloths, washtubs full of ice and beer and a small band-box give it that greasy-food-briar-hopper feel that I love. What's wrong with me?

I was gone long before you. Were DJ Hammond and Jay Hanson still there when you passed through?  I used to work with a guy who had a neckbeard long before Kyle Orton made it famous.  I always thought that was a funny nickname.

i'm sure i know some of the guys your age, and you may know my sister who graduated in 91.

You always remember the older guys, not the ones who come in after you.

Hint
My wife graduated in '89, her maiden name was Croll. We have been married since the year before you graduated. Man, that makes me feel old.

Did you see?
Mariano Duncan get thrown out for arguing?  He threw his hat at Angel Hernandez who then gave it to a fan.  It was kinda funny.

Oh, and I remember there being an argument about Stephen Drew somewhere on the site and when he would be in the Majors (or something like that).  Well, he made his MLB debut tonight.

Speaking of which, Dustin Moseley has given up 10 hits and 4 runs in 4 IP so far, including 2 homers, but the LAA lead 7-4.

by Slyde on Jul 17, 2006 11:45 PM EDT   0 recs

not to be a stickler
but Drew made his debut a few days ago (Friday or Saturday) -- he was called up after Counsell was injured.  He was wearing the collar until tonight.

Well, I'm late the party as usual.

But here is the rundown.

I grew up in the suburbs of Phoenix. Probably as one of the 10 Reds fans in the state. I can thank my grandmother growing up for making me a Reds fan. Every summer I'd make the trip back to her home in WVa and we'd make the trip across Ohio to watch the Reds at Riverfront. And then I'd get home and my dad would drive us from Phoenix to LA to watch the Reds play the Dodgers once a year.

I played baseball competitively up till my senior year. I was a catcher caught behind a younger guy who was a much better all around player, and I couldn't hit breaking balls to save my life.

I don't really root for any other teams actively, although I do have a soft spot for the local Dbacks because I'm a partial season ticket holder. And I always would like to see the A's do well, I've probably seen them play every year in Spring Training since I was knee high.

And I'm a "Reds Daily" Red Reporter reader. I read his stuff on Redszone and his blog Reds Daily long before I put 2 and 2 together and got to know him better. Then he joined the cool kids and started this blog and the rest is history.

a (Colerain) Cardinal Fan
a fun thread...

Grew up on the west side of Cincinnati (White Oak)

Colerain High School

a year of JV football, not good enough to make the baseball team.  Played slow pitch softball for years, and golf now.

Now live in Mableton Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.

Other teams - Bengals, Bearcats (basketball), Braves when they are not playing the Reds (I work for Turner, so its hard to cheer against the company team).

Found RR after getting frustrated with RedZone.

  1. grew up in Cincinnati (Montgomery)
  2. went to Sycamore High (home of the Greek God of Walks...but, well after my time)
  3. I was a runner...cross country, track (couldn't hit the damn curve ball)
  4. I live in Omaha, NE now (by the way, a random comment:  when I was watching a Royals-Reds game here, I (obviously) got the Royals announcers.  Anyhow, during the game, they said the key to the game was Quinton McCracken, a real veteran that can come through in the clutch.  Which makes me believe that if your team loses long enough, you lose all concept of what a good player looks like)
  5. I root for Bengals, Carolina Panthers, Wake Forest (I attended there), Michigan State (my wife attended there)
  6. I was searching for Reds blogs, as I had a hankering to read a fans perspective on some ridiculously inane move by O'Brien

Johnson Central
We went undefeated my senior year in quick recall.  We beat Johnson Central four times that year, including the finals of regionals.  I really hated their coach though.  She was very evil, and our team and coach always made fun of her.  After we beat them in regionals, she made us stay two hours later, protesting questions, and making a fool of herself!  I think her name is something Dillon...

My names gives my location away!
Lived all my life in the Dayton area.

I graduated from Chaminade High School back when it was all-male except for a couple of secretaries in the office and the cafeteria moms.

I played baseball.

I root for the Dayton Flyers in college sports - also Xavier except when they play UD.  I got my bachelor's from UD and masters' from X.  I also root for the Buckeyes.  In pro sports I like the Phoenix Suns (love Steve Nash) and the Bengals.  I grew up a Browns fan before the Bengals started. (Yes I'm that old!)

I found the site from back when Kos was promoting various sports sites.

I thoroughly enjoy reading all your comments.  I'm sure Wayne Krivsky reads us all the time for advice on trades!  And Narron doesn't make out the line-up until he comes online for our advice!

I notice this morning that on ESPN.com that Buster Olney writes that Reds GM Wayne Krivsky was able to land what a lot of contenders are seeking: bullpen help while Keith Law thinks the Nationals got the best of that deal.  Time will tell.

It's great reading where all of you are from.  Good idea, JD!
