Wapwallopen Woman Chosen Student Delegate at RIT

Josephine Smith of Wapwallopen will represent the Kate Gleason College of Engineering as student delegate to Rochester Institute of Technology’s 117th commencement, May 24-25. She will deliver a graduation speech during commencement ceremonies on May 25.

Smith, a computer engineering BS/MS major, is the daughter of Donna and the late Aubrey Smith.

Recipient of a Presidential Scholarship, an Alumni Scholarship and Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar Award, Smith was named to the Dean’s List and was president and secretary of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. She also served as a note taker and held positions in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences and Grace Watson Dining Hall.

On co-op with Xerox Corp., she worked in software development and software and hardware troubleshooting. She designed and implemented JPEG image compression and decompression modules using standard compression algorithms on digital signal processors. She plans to continue working in research and development with Xerox and to pursue a doctorate in electrical engineering.
