ROHNERT PARK, CA -- Scott White scored with 10
minutes remaining to complete a second-half comeback and lead
unranked Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 2-1 upset win over No. 7
UC Davis in the second semifinal of the California Collegiate
Athletic Association Men's Soccer Championship Tournament on
Thursday.
White took a pass in front from Juan Carlos
Bolanos and tapped home the game-winner past Aggie goalie Adrian
Del Rio in the 80th minute to complete the comeback for the Toros,
who improved to 11-9 and will meet No. 18 Grand Canyon for the
league championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Toros, making their
first post season appearance since 1988, avenged a 1-0 defeat at
the hands of UC Davis earlier in the season.
"We battled with them. We know we
were as good as them and we just proved we could play with them
today," said CSUDH head coach Joe Flanagan, who celebrated
his 32nd birthday in style on Thursday. "This tournament gave
us a chance to show what we could do."
UC Davis, still in contention for an NCAA
Championship tournament berth, fell to 15-2-2 on the year and
after dropping its first contest to a CCAA opponent in 1999.
The Aggies, who finished the contest with just
six shots on goal, converted one of their few opportunities in the
opening period when Matt DeJong scored from 10 yards out midway
through the first half.
The tide turned nearly 20 minutes into the
second half, however, when UCD starting goalie Jason Kong was
assessed a red card and ejected for fouling CSUDH's Matt Montoya
in the penalty box. Montoya, who had to leave the contest with an
ankle injury, was replaced on the penalty kick by Bolanos, who
notched his 14th goal of the season to tie the score.
Playing with a man down, the Aggies attempted
to take the lead, but DeJong's shot in the 75th minute just
missed. The Toros didn't miss the chance to seize the lead,
however, as White knocked home the game-winner. UCD had one final
chance to tie late, but Sean Buchanan's blast hit the left post.
