Garza Leads Cal State Dominguez Hills to Victory Over Sonoma State
in CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament

November 5, 1999

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Not even a case of whiplash could stop CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS forward Dianne Garza from winning another game for the Toros. Garza scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third sudden death overtime, to lead the No. 11 Toros to a 2-1 upset road win over No. 4 SONOMA STATE in the second semifinal of the 1999 California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.

Garza, who suffered whiplash less than a week ago, scored the game-ender in the 131st minute off a touch pass from Natalie Franklin. The assist for Franklin was set up by a beautiful cross pass from All-CCAA midfielder April Colen from the right corner. Garza took the quick touch from Franklin in the left portion of the SSU goal area and drilled the game-ender past Cossack goalkeeper Kara Stout, who had given up just 10 goals in 1999 prior to Friday's loss.

"We were just hoping someone would put it in the net," said Garza. "I definitely didn't think it would be me. I had nothing left."

That's news to the rest of the Toros, since Garza has come through before. The sophomore from Temple City, Calif. has tallied 12 goals in 1999 and scored three of the last four game-winning goals for CSUDH.

The two teams played physical throughout, with a total of 43 fouls being assessed. Garza scored the game's opener on a through feed from Myisha Delaney, who split two defenders before delivering the ball to Garza on the right wing.

The Cossacks, who fell to 15-2-4 and will await the NCAA Championship regional pairings on Monday, had several chances to score and finally broke through to tie the contest with just five minutes remaining. Junior forward Shannon Rake scored off a rebound from 20 feet away after several players from both squads battled for the ball in the middle of the CSUDH box.

The win for the Toros was their 12th straight, matching their school record, and improves their 1999 mark to 15-4-1. For SSU, the loss snapped a 20-match home unbeaten streak dating back to the Cossacks' final contest in 1997.
