ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Junior midfielder Tera
Oldfield¹s free kick goal with less than two minutes
remaining in the fourth overtime gave No. 21 CAL POLY POMONA a 1-0
upset win over No. 11 CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS in the title game
of the 1999 California Collegiate Athletic Association Women¹s
Soccer Championship Tournament on Sunday.
The win gave the Broncos their second CCAA
women¹s soccer crown and denied the Toros a fifth-straight
league title. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 15-5 on the season while
Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 15-5-1. Both squads and No. 4
SONOMA STATE, which was upset by CSUDH in the league semifinals on
Friday, await the NCAA Division II Championship regional pairings
to be announced Monday afternoon. Two of the three squads are
expected to be selected for NCAA postseason play.
Oldfield¹s goal brought an improbable end
to a 149-minute contest mired by heavy winds in the first half and
a torrential downpour of rain that began at halftime and lasted
the duration of the game. Both elements significantly altered the
ball movement throughout the contest.
After being fouled 30 yards from goal, Oldfield
sent a free kick out of the reach of Toros¹ goalie Heather
Williams and inside the right post for the sudden-death
game-winner. Just 75 seconds remained before the game would have
been declared a draw and the league champion decided by a
penalty-kick tiebreaker procedure.
Cal State Dominguez Hills won every offensive
statistical category except the one that determines the contest¹s
winner. CSUDH outshot Pomona 16-7, had a 10-3 advantage in corner
kicks and had numerous near-miss scoring opportunities. All-CCAA
midfielder April Colen shot the ball wide right in the first half
and fourth overtime, and fired a shot that deflected off a
defender and just over goal in the second period of regulation.
Defender Meredith Disney nearly won the game for the Toros in the
third overtime, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar and
wide right. Midfielder Erin Fieger¹s chance in the third
overtime also missed wide right.
The Broncos nearly ended the game in the second
overtime when defender Kim Ackman drilled a shot less than a foot
wide of the left post.
