WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- CAL STATE, SAN
BERNARDINO outside hitter Mary Thornton has been named the
California Collegiate Athletic Association Women¹s Volleyball
Player of the Week for the week of November 1-7.
Thornton, a 5-10 senior from Hesperia, Calif.,
kept the Coyotes in the hunt for a postseason berth by powering
CSUSB to victories over Chico State and UC Davis last week. She
averaged 5.0 kills, 2.86 digs and 0.86 blocks per game, hit .417
(35-7-67) and added six blocks and four service aces in seven
games.
Thornton opened the week with 18 kills, 10 digs
and three blocks, and hit .471 (18-2-34) in a three-game sweep of
Chico State. She then tallied 17 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and
three service aces while hitting .364 (17-5-33) in a four-game
triumph over UC Davis. The Player of the Week honor is the first
of Thornton¹s career and the second for the Coyotes in 1999.
