Can you provide a brief history of ABC?
During the late 1940s, ABC bought time on other stations and produced programs on their schedules to give its own technicians experience in studio production. An early example of this programming was Play The Game(1946), which was produced by ABC using the DuMont Network facilities.

In early 1948, ABC lined up a network of four stations - an amalgam of DuMont and independent stations - for a series called On The Corner with radio star Henry Morgan. This show is considered ABC's first "network" program. In August 1948, ABC opened its own New York station and began production on a regular basis.

In 1953, ABC merged with United Paramount Theatres. The network began its historic association with Walt Disney in 1954 with a show that was originally called Disneyland and eventually became The Wonderful World Of Disney. ABC merged with Capital Cities, Inc. in 1986 and became Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. In 1996, Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. merged with the Walt Disney Company and became ABC, Inc.

WHICH BROWSERS DOES ABC.COM SUPPORT?

ABC.com is committed to supporting Version 4.0 and above of the following browsers: AOL, Netscape and Internet Explorer. You may be able to view some of ABC.com?s features if you have an earlier version of one of these browsers. However, we recommend 4.0 browser or higher as they are faster at certain operations, more reliable, and support all of the features that ABC.com uses.

TOP

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM SYSTEM (HARDWARE/SOFTWARE) REQUIREMENTS FOR USING ABC.COM?

For the best experience using our services, we recommend at a minimum:

PC- Pentium 90 or better with a minimum of 32 MB RAM and Windows 95, or NT 3.5.1

Mac- PowerPC with System 7.1 and 32 MB RAM

Connection Speed- 56kbps modem however, for optimal viewing, we recommend a cable modem, DSL or other broadband solution.

Browsers- Version 4.0 and above of the following browsers: AOL, Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Screen Resolution- 800x600 - to change this see How can I change my screen resolution?

TOP

WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE THE SPEED WITH WHICH I ACCESS YOUR SITE?

The following suggestions may help to enhance the performance of our services:
Check your modem to ensure it is at least 56 kbps, our minimum requirement.

Turn your graphics off--an option most browsers provide. This will significantly reduce the download time of graphics-rich pages by displaying only their text. (Some browsers--such as Netscape 1.1 or above--allow you to defer image loading until after the text has displayed. While this doesn't improve overall speed, it does offer the text while images download.) Generally, you will find that we try to minimize the size of our graphics to reduce download time.

Clear your disk and memory caches. Also, check your memory cache setting to ensure it's no greater than 25 percent of your computer's total RAM.

Close any applications you are not using to increase the amount of RAM available to your browser.

Decrease your browser's verification frequency. If using Netscape, for example, set your cache preferences to verify one time per session, as opposed to every time you retrieve a page.

Note: Your Internet access provider may pass through many nodes before it is able to contact ABC.com's servers. Unfortunately, as the number of nodes increases, your page retrieval rate will suffer incrementally.

TOP

WHAT IS "CACHE" MEMORY?

A "cache" (pronounced like "cash") temporarily stores on your computer the information from web pages you have visited. We suggest users "clear" their cache occasionally, especially if a page is stuck with outdated material or information has not been refreshed. For information on how to clear your cache, see
How do I clear the cache on my browser?

TOP

WHY DO I SOMETIMES GET OUTDATED INFORMATION?

ABC.com's services vary in their timeliness. Most of ABC.com is continuously updated. If you are receiving outdated information, we suggest you try any or all of the following:

Click Reload/Refresh
Clear your cache. This will force your browser to retrieve the most recent version of that document from its source on the network. For information on how to clear your cache, see
How do I clear the cache on my browser?

Increase your browser's document verification frequency. For example, if you are using Netscape, select Verify Documents Every Time in Cache and Network Preferences. Please note that this may affect your navigation speed.

Note: If none of these suggestions is effective, your Internet access provider may be caching documents on its own server. In this case, you may not receive an updated document until the next time your Internet provider clears its cache. Documents that have not been accessed since the last time the cache was emptied will be current. You can call or email your Internet access provider to suggest that they increase the frequency with which they update their cache.

HOW DO I CLEAR THE CACHE ON MY BROWSER?

Please choose the instructions for the browser you use below:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 - To clear the cache in IE 4.0, you must use the 'Internet Options' menu which can be accessed by clicking once on the 'View' selection found across the top of the IE 4.0 browser between the 'Edit' and 'Go' drop down menus. Click once on the 'Internet Options' selection to display the menu. By using the tab menus at the top, select the tab titled 'General Options'. Click once on the 'Delete Files' button. You will be prompted with a pop-up box that asks if you wish to delete all temporary Internet files. Click 'OK'. You have successfully cleared your cache.

Netscape 4.0 - To access the cache menu, click on 'Edit' on the top tool bar. Move your cursor down to the selection marked 'Preferences' and select 'Network Preferences'. A menu with several selections will appear. Double click on the 'Category' marked 'Advanced', which will in turn display several options, one being for cache. Select the 'Cache' option and click on both buttons, 'Disk Cache' and 'Memory Cache'. Make certain you click 'OK' when Netscape prompts you with a message asking you if you want to remove disk/memory cache files. After you clear both disk and memory cache you can exit the 'Preferences' menu.

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN'T ACCESS USING WEBTV?

There are three items WebTV is not compatible with on ABC.com. First, WebTV is not compatible with the latest versions of Real Audio and Video, which we use on our site. However, .wav files should work. Second, users are not able to make account modifications online. Instead, they can email us to make the changes for them. Third, WebTV does support the current versions of HTML and JavaScript that many of ABC.com's pages use, but it does not support Java.

TOP

WHAT IS "JAVA"?

Java and Java script are two very different things. What this paragraph is referring to is Java script.

Java is a software program that allows us to do interactive charts and features that make Internet content more dynamic. Java is "Web-friendly", and will run on any computer that has Java support installed. Java programs do not provide a security risk to your computer. Instead, they run within the browser itself and are prevented from reading or writing information to or from your computer's hard drive.

HOW DO I BOOKMARK MY FAVORITE PAGES?

Most Web browsers allow you to create bookmarks which allow you to return to a URL you have visited on the Web. Once you have added a bookmark, a preferred page is only a click away. Adding ABC.com's home page to your bookmark page will make it easier for you to return to the site. For instructions, select from the browser you use below:

TOP

I BOOKMARKED TO A PAGE WITHIN YOUR SERVICE AND NOW IT DOES NOT WORK. WHY?

The page you bookmarked may have moved. Our services are always growing and improving. That means that while we work very hard to maintain consistency in the basic structure, there are times when the address to a particular page must change. Also, some pages are seasonally driven and might change or be removed when the season ends.

I AM INTERESTED IN MAKING AN ONLINE TRANSACTION ON YOUR SITE. HOW DO I KNOW IF THE SITE IS SECURE OR INSECURE?

If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0 you will see a little lock in the status bar at the bottom of the Web page. Double-click on this icon and you will see the exact type of security used.

If you are using Netscape 3.0 you will see a solid key with a blue background as an indication of a secured site.

If you are using Netscape 4.0 the "lock" icon appears in two places within the window-Main Menu Command Toolbar (top) and Status Line (bottom, far left-hand corner). The lock is always open until a user accesses a secure site. Once this takes place the icon "locks" and becomes highlighted.

TOP

I AM HAVING PROBLEMS CONNECTING TO ONE OF YOUR PAGES. WHEN I DO, MY SYSTEM LOCKS UP. WHAT'S GOING ON?

There are several possibilities:

A browser error may have occurred. If this is the case, close the browser, reopen it, and try again.

If other people can access the site, it may be a problem with your Web page cache. Clear your cache and then try reloading the site again. For instructions on how to clear your cache, see
How do I clear the cache on my browser?

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may have a problem with their servers. Try accessing other pages, and if the problem persists, contact your ISP.

Occassionally the server generating our pages goes down. Be patient. We have engineers on call at all times to resolve problems such as these.

HOW CAN I CHANGE MY SCREEN RESOLUTION?

Screen resolution affects the size of the desktop in graphical operating systems such as Windows 95, 98, and NT. More icons, word-processing lines, spreadsheet cells, and larger graphics in graphic developing suites are displayed on the desktop using a higher resolution. The four standard PC resolutions are VGA, Super VGA, and XGA. Each resolution is measured in pixels, which are picture elements of the screen. VGA resolution displays 640 pixels across the screen and 480 pixels down. Super VGA displays 800x600 resolution while XGA display 1024x768 and 1280x1024 pixels. The most common resolution is 800x600 pixels. Seeing more on the desktop increases productivity by eliminating some scrolling and switching back and forth between windows. Ultimately, adjusting screen resolution could make one's eyes happier.

Here are procedures for changing the screen resolution in Windows 95, 98 and NT :

Start by...
Click on the "Start" menu on the bottom left hand corner of your screen Select "Settings" and then "Control Panel" Double click on the "Display" icon Click on "Settings" tab Click and hold down the left mouse button on the selector in the "Desktop Area" section. Move the selector to the left or the right to decrease or increase desktop size respectively.

Next, continue with the operating system you are using below...

NT:
Click the "Test" button at the bottom of the window. A window will ask you if you want to try the new settings. Click "OK." Wait 5 seconds as a test bitmap is displayed. A window asks if the test bitmap was displayed properly. Click "yes" or "no." Click the "Apply" button in the bottom right corner. Now the new settings are applied.

95, 98:
Click the "Apply" button in the bottom right corner. A window asks if you really want to resize the desktop. Click "Yes" The desktop will resize and now a window appears asking if you want to keep those new settings. Click "yes" or "no" or you can wait about 15 seconds and the old settings will be restored.
