RESTON, Va. — The American Society of Newspaper Editors has launched
a nationwide search to fill the position of executive director. Lee
Stinnett, the current executive director, will retire next June 30.
The search committee, which will be headed by ASNE Vice President Chris
Anderson, includes the ASNE officers and a number of other directors.
Stinnett will administer the search.
According to Anderson, the committee seeks a seasoned manager with journalism
and association experience to head its headquarters staff based in Reston,
Va. “The association experience could either be as a volunteer or
as paid professional staff,” he said.
“We seek a detail-oriented, creative thinker who can work effectively
with busy editors,” Anderson said. “The ASNE executive director deals
with a variety of people — prominent public figures, other members of the
public, the press, funders, and staff.”
In his note of resignation to the ASNE board, Stinnett said his position
is “the best job in the world.”
The ASNE executive director heads a seven-person staff, and manages
ASNE’s cash flow, which now exceeds $2 million annually. The
job description is available at this link. Deadline for applications
is Dec. 15.
The search committee includes: President Edward Seaton, The Manhattan
(Kan.) Mercury; Vice President Chris Anderson, The Gazette, Colorado Springs;
Secretary Richard Oppel, Austin (Texas) American-Statesman; Treasurer Tim
McGuire, Star Tribune, Minneapolis; Treasurer-elect Diane McFarlin, Sarasota
(Fla.) Herald-Tribune; Past president Sandy Rowe, The Oregonian, Portland;
and board member Gregory Moore, The Boston Globe.
Founded in 1922, ASNE is an organization of the main editors of daily
newspapers in the Americas. There are currently 850 members.
