RESTON, Va — The American Society of Newspaper Editors has published
a handbook In an effort to help newsrooms answer the perennial questions,
“What is local news and how does one best cover it?”
“The Local News Handbook,” put together by ASNE’s 1998-99 Readership
Issues Committee will help newsrooms restore the relationship between a
reader and his or her local newspaper editor.
“By listening as our neighbors talk — through scholars and researchers
— about what is essential to them, we can build our journalism,” noted
Frank Denton, chair of the Readership Issues Committee and editor of the
Wisconsin State Journal, Madison.
The handbook takes ideas from inside and outside newspapers to tackle
the underlying question and includes essays from editors from around the
nation.
The 210-page handbook is available from ASNE for $15. Send a check made
out to the ASNE Foundation to Publications Fulfillment, 11690B Sunrise
Valley Drive, Reston VA 20191-1409. http://www.asne.org/kiosk/publist.htm
