RESTON, Va — The American Society of Newspaper Editors has issued a
handbook that will help newsrooms bring world news home to their readers.
The toolbox of ideas and tips, called “Bringing the World Home,” was
produced by ASNE’s International Committee. George Krimsky, a former AP
foreign correspondent and founder of what is now the International Center
for Journalists, is the principal writer.
“Readers need to know more about the world because the world is part
of their lives in ways that they often don’t realize — in ways that are,
in fact, easily covered if journalists just do what they do best: report,
write and edit,” notes Edward L. Seaton, 1998-99 ASNE president and editor-in-chief
of The Manhattan (Kan.) Mercury.”
The report includes Web sites to look for international information,
tips on how to cover events abroad (including what reporters should to
take with them), how to best use stringers, and how to make the Associated
Press’ foreign report more relevant to newspaper readers.
Examples of good international reporting — at large papers and small
— are interspersed throughout the book and give editors excellent models
to emulate in their own coverage.
The Freedom Forum helped pay for the book.
The 84-page spiral-bound handbook is available from ASNE for $9. Send
a check made out to the ASNE Foundation to Publications Fulfillment, 11690B
Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston VA 20191-1409. Foreign orders must be paid
