COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Peter K. Bhatia, executive editor of The
Oregonian in Portland, has been elected treasurer-designate of the American
Society of Newspaper Editors. He will become treasurer of the 850-member
group in April and rise through the officer ranks to head ASNE beginning
in April 2003.
Bhatia, 46, has been a member of ASNE since 1987, and has chaired two
of ASNE’s key committees, those for its convention program and magazine.
He has also served on the Change, Future of Newspapers and Minorities committees.
He is current vice chair of the Ethics and Values Committee. He was elected
to the ASNE board in 1997.
Before becoming executive editor in 1998, Bhatia was managing editor
of The Oregonian. Prior to that, he was executive editor of The Fresno
(Calif.) Bee, managing editor of The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee, editor of
The York (Pa.) Dispatch, managing editor of The Dallas Times Herald, and
deputy managing editor of the San Francisco Examiner.
Bhatia is a native of Pullman, Wash., and a graduate of Stanford University.
He is married to Elizabeth Dahl, a fellow journalist. They have two children:
Megan, 13 and J.P., 10.
ASNE, founded in 1922, is the main organization of the directing editors
of daily newspapers in the Americas.
