Newspaper editors to gather in Washington April 11-14

RESTON, Va. — President Clinton, Colombian President Andres
Pastrana, America Online CEO Steve Case and Colin Powell are among the speakers
who will address the American Society of Newspaper Editors at its convention
April 11-14 in Washington.
One of the major party presidential nominees, Vice President
Gore, has also accepted an invitation to address the editors. His Republican
opponent, Gov. George W. Bush of Texas, has been invited.
During its 17th annual meeting, ASNE will discuss
topics as diverse as the U.S. census and women in sports as well as specific
challenges facing the newspaper industry, including journalism credibility,
diversity and attracting new readers.
Pastrana will speak at the Wednesday luncheon, Clinton at Thursday's
and Case at Friday's luncheon. Powell will address a Wednesday afternoon session
on America’s Promise, the initiative he chairs.
At Tuesday afternoon’s opening session, Charles Ogletree of
the Harvard Law School will lead a discussion on the future of newspapers in
the new millennium with the CEOs of three major newspaper companies: Arthur
O. Sulzberger Jr. of The New York Times Co., William R. Burleigh of E.W. Scripps
Co. and Gary B. Pruitt of The McClatchy Co.
Wednesday morning will be dedicated to discussion of the third
year of ASNE’s Journalism Credibility Project. Editors will learn what has worked
to improve credibility and what hasn’t at eight test-site newspapers around
the country. Media researcher Christine Urban will detail research findings
from the eight sites.
A panel including WNBA most valuable player Cynthia Cooper of
the Houston Comets and pro golfer Meg Mallon will explore the exploding growth
in women’s sports. Editors will also hear from the winners of the ASNE Distinguished
Writing Awards.
ASNE is led this year by President N. Christian Anderson III,
publisher and CEO of The Orange County Register, Santa Ana, Calif. Convention
Program Chair is Karla Garrett Harshaw, editor of the Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun.
During convention week, ASNE members will elect five members
to the board of directors and the board will elect new officers.
ASNE, with about 900 members, is the largest organization of
directing editors of daily newspapers in the Americas. More than 700 registrants
will attend the convention, which will be held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel.
ABOUT PRESS COVERAGE OF THE ASNE CONVENTION
Pre-registration will be allowed for journalists who send in their registration
form available online by April 7 at 5 p.m.; registration will also be available
on-site.
Members of the electronic media should note that lighting
will be available in the Capitol Ballroom only and that if you intend to cover
the luncheon events, you should arrange your own lighting or consider a pool.
