MINNEAPOLIS -- Rick Rodriguez was elected treasurer-designate of the American
Society of Newspaper Editors during its fall board meeting here. He will become
treasurer of the group in April, at the annual convention, and rise through
the officer ranks each year until reaching the ASNE presidency in April 2005.
Rodriguez has been executive editor of The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee since 1998.
He has been with the paper since 1982.
"I'm very honored to be on the ladder," Rodriguez said. "ASNE has a long and
deep history of standing for the principles of the First Amendment and improving
newspapers. I hope I can carry on these traditions."
Rodriguez has been an active member of ASNE. He has served on the board of
directors since 1997 and chaired the Diversity, International and Readership
Issues committees.
ASNE President Tim J. McGuire, executive editor of the Star Tribune, Minneapolis,
said he was very happy with Rodriguez's election. McGuire praised the leadership
Rodriguez has shown during his years in ASNE.
"Rick Rodriguez is a man of great stature," McGuire said. "He is a great addition
to the ASNE ladder. He will be the first Latino president of ASNE and he is
a fine choice."
Rodriguez joins McGuire; Diane H. McFarlin, publisher, Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune,
vice president; Peter K. Bhatia, executive editor, The Oregonian, Portland,
secretary; and Karla Garrett Harshaw, editor, Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun, treasurer,
in ASNE's leadership.
ASNE, founded in 1922, with about 850 members, is the main organization of
the directing editors of daily newspapers in the Americas. The organization
is leading efforts to increase diversity in America's newsrooms, bolster media
credibility and improve high school journalism.
