ASNE diversity director
Responsible to ASNE executive director
 
Articulate the case for newsroom diversity.
Objective: Keep ASNE focused on the newsroom diversity 2000 mission statement.
    RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Craft the basic messages.
  • Develop funding proposals and budgets.
  • Conceive and produce publications, reports and correspondence.
  • Remain accessible through the mails and phone.
    • Respond to correspondence in a timely manner (same day or one day).
    • Return phone calls promptly.
    • Offer advice to editors and students.
    • Respond to media inquiries.
  • Inform ASNE executive director, ASNE board, Diversity Committee, and minorities constituencies.
    • Confer with executive director in the development of policies and in matters of interest and importance.
    • Keep leadership informed through correspondence and timely mailings.
    • Generate periodic mailings to key groups outside ASNE.
  • Maintain friendly and professional relations with key constituencies.
    • Attend conventions of minority journalism associations.
    • With approval of executive director, accept invitations to attend other meetings, as a participant or speaker.
Support ASNE Diversity Committee.
Objective: Help the Committee develop a well-focused program to pursue the Year 2000 goal.
    RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Help chairman develop plans.
  • Work with sub-committees to develop projects.
  • Draft agendas for meetings.
  • Attend committee meetings.
  • Prepare reports to the board.
Develop diversity programs.
Objective: Create productive, cost-effective programs relating to the newsroom diversity 2000 mission statement
    RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan and help run job fairs (currently eight).
    • Share responsibilities with NAA staff.
    • Recruit sponsors and establish schedule for coming year.
    • Update and distribute guidelines.
    • Work with volunteer planners to develop program and mailings.
    • Establish and monitor timetables.
    • Attend assigned job fairs.
    • Review evaluations and prepare report.
  • Plan and help run short courses at universities with high minority enrollments.
    • Recruit host universities and establish schedule for coming year.
    • Update and distribute guidelines.
    • Work with volunteer planners to develop program and mailings.
    • Establish and monitor timetables.
    • Attend short courses.
    • Review evaluations and prepare report.
  •   Conduct annual employment survey to measure progress in newsroom employment
    • Develop survey plan
    • Draft cover letters
    • Check responses
    • Follow through with non-respondents
    • Supervise input of data
    • Write analysis
    • Distribute report
  • Support convention News Lab to publish ASNE Reporter.
    • Develop plan and guidelines for the project.
    • Help committee chair identify and recruit volunteer leaders and student participants.
    • Assist in securing equipment, facilities and accommodations.
    • Work with students one-on-one.
    • Provide information about ASNE and the convention to students and professionals.
  • Develop guides, reports and information materials.
    • Work with members to develop concepts.
    • Write sections.
    • Obtain copy from members and others.
    • Edit copy.
    • Develop design concepts.
    • See projects through to printing and distribution.
    • Prepare periodic updates.
    • Assist editors on how best to use reports and other materials.
Produce Diversity Focus, a bimonthly digest of newspaper diversity initiatives.
Objective: Produce an four-times-a-year newsletter that is a compendium of the best ideas about newsroom diversity.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Enterprise content.
    • Generate letters to editors.
    • Interview editors on innovations.
    • Mine publications and newspapers for ideas.
  • Write copy.
Assist ASNE with other tasks
Objective: Contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of ASNE headquarters.
    RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Help with convention preparation.
  • Undertake assigned duties at convention in addition to the News Lab and minorities work.
  • Assist with routine office work when needed.
  • Supervise administrative assistant.
  • Help maintain ASNE information database.
  • Undertake other projects as needs demand.
  • Update job description.
