Job description
ASNE executive director
Responsible to ASNE Board of Directors

 
Administer headquarters.
Objective: Maintain a friendly, productive, and efficient headquarters for the Society.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Fill staff positions approved by board of directors with the best possible candidates
  • Supervise staff
    • Monitor performance on a daily basis.
    • Update job descriptions.
    • Conduct performance reviews (quarterly in first year, annually thereafter).
    • Challenge individual staff members to think creatively and make the most of their jobs.
  • Supervise careful handing of funds.
  • Negotiate desirable terms of office space with landlord.
  • Establish efficient, effective and ethical office procedures.
  • Encourage and maintain a professional office atmosphere.
Assist ASNE leadership in their roles in the Society.
Objective: Help ASNE leaders make the most of their offices.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • President
    • Serve as administrative aide.
    • Provide a steady flow of ideas and suggestions.
    • Help anticipate opportunities to further goals.
    • Follow through on assignments delegated by president.
    • Monitor the work of the committees as the president’s eye.
    • Draft letters and memos.
    • Alert president to issues and trends.
    • Prepare for major events, including the board and executive committee meetings and the convention.
      • Prepare board meeting agendas and a detailed guide to the meeting.
      • Draft headtable introductions for convention luncheons.
      • Help plan fall board meeting.
    • Keep president well informed.
    • Open doors, carry suitcases.

    • Propose jokes.
       
  • Vice president
    • Provide information and suggestions about the committees and potential committee leaders.
    • Anticipate funding needs and opportunities.

    •  
  • Secretary
    • Alert secretary to possible disqualified members.
    • Propose development of membership policies.
    • Anticipate committee appointments.
    • Generate materials to promote ASNE membership.
    • Review secretary’s reports drafted by administrative assistant.
    • Draft minutes for board of directors meetings.
     
  • Treasurer
    • Review budget proposals and treasurer’s reports generated by administrative assistant.
    • Propose policies and actions to improve ASNE’s use and management of funds.
  • Board of directors
    • Work with the Nominations Committee to nominate directors.
    • Work with Elections Committee to count ballots.
    • Inform candidates of election results.
    • Inform elected directors of ASNE bylaws, procedures and policies, and board traditions.
    • Keep the board informed on major developments, usually working through the president.

    • Propose improvements in the Society’s mission statement.
       
  • ASNE Committees
    • Suggest substantive projects for committees to pursue.
    • Assist chairs in making plans for meetings.
    • Attend and help run committee meetings.
    • Undertake projects under the direction of the committees.
    Maintain friendly and helpful relations with members and outsiders.
    Objective: Enhance ASNE’s value and image.
    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Respond to telephone and written inquiries.
    • Generate informative materials about the Society.
    • Guide press inquires to officers, board members and committee chairs where appropriate and serve as a backstop source if they are unavailable.
    • Foster communications between ASNE and other groups.
      • Fulfill responsibilities as secretary of the Council of Presidents of National Journalism Organizations.
      • Accept speaking engagements.
    Provide continuity
    Objective: Keep a consistent focus on the major issues impacting journalism.
    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Encourage multi-year thinking among ASNE leaders.
    • Promote follow-through on one-year activities.
    Administer ASNE Foundation.
    Objective: Maximize the Foundation’s resources and utilize them in the most cost-effective and productive way.
    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Help ASNEF president develop and implement policies and fund-raising strategies.
    • Develop and implement gift solicitations including grant applications.
    • Acknowledge gifts received.
    • Keep members, potential donors and others informed.
    Keep personally well informed.
    Objective: Enhance other responsibilities.
    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Read daily newspapers, trade publications and books about newspapers and journalism.
    Undertake other tasks as circumstances require. 
    • Respond promptly to requests for information.
    • Update job description.
