RESTON, Va. –– The American Society of Newspaper Editors has created a section on its Web site for postings by journalism educators seeking to secure summer work at newspapers.

Interested educators should write a four-sentence description using the following format:

  • Begin with the name in caps, followed by title, academic mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address.
  • The next sentence should describe academic interests and responsibilities.
  • The third sentence should indicate the type of summer newspaper work being sought and potential beginning and end dates for employment.
  • A concluding sentence containing anything else that would be of interest to an editor seeking to fill a summer position.
The information should be sent via e-mail to dmk@asne.org

The J-Ed Jobnet will remain online through mid-summer. In addition to the listings from educators, editors seeking to fill summer positions will be invited to post “help wanted” descriptions. Negotiations for jobs will take place directly between the educator and newspapers.

“Educators and editors are encouraged to seek opportunities to share their expertise and creativity in the dynamic environment of a newsroom,” said Edward L. Seaton, chairman of ASNE’s Education for Journalism Committee and editor-in-chief of The Manhattan (Kan.) Mercury. “These experiences can establish longer-term ties that benefit both newspapers and journalism education.”

Another ASNE initiative, the Institute for Journalism Excellence, will place two dozen journalism educators in newsrooms around the country for a six-week summer work residency. The program, which includes a stipend, housing and transportation, is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

ASNE, with 825 members, is an organization of the main editors of daily newspapers in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1922, ASNE focuses on the professional development of its members and journalism-related issues.
