The American Society of Newspaper Editors is calling on Israeli Defense Forces and the Palestinian Authority to treat journalists as noncombatants.

The ASNE Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution specifically asking Israel to “cease any acts of violence” against journalists. The ASNE action was a response to the wounding of at least six journalists, including a reporter from The Boston Globe.

“We are … specifically disturbed by a series of incidents in recent days that appear to involve IDF units deliberately taking action against journalists of various nationalities and media,” the resolution states.

Copies of the resolution were sent to the Israeli, Palestinian and United States governments.

ASNE, with about 850 members, is the largest organization of directing editors of daily newspapers in the Americas. It is a leader in improving diversity in newsrooms, strengthening newspaper credibility and improving high school journalism.
