David A.
Zeeck was elected treasurer-designate of the American Society of Newspaper Editors
during its fall board meeting, in Sarasota, Fla. Oct. 11. Zeeck will become
treasurer of the group in April, at the annual convention, and rise through
the officer ranks each year until reaching the ASNE presidency in April 2006.
Zeeck has been executive
editor of The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash., since 1994. Before that he worked
at The Kansas City (Mo.) Star for 20 years in various positions, culminating
in executive editor.
"I'm excited about the future
of newspapers, both in print and online, and their re-emergence as the sole
mass medium in most American cities," Zeeck said. "I look forward to working
within ASNE to make that future happen."
Zeeck joined ASNE in 1990
and has been an active member of the board of directors since 1998. He has been
active in ASNE committee work.
ASNE President Diane McFarlin,
publisher of the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune, said "Dave Zeeck has been committed
to ASNE for more than a decade. That commitment, combined with his vision and
energy, will make him a great president of the organization."
Zeeck joins McFarlin; Peter
K. Bhatia, executive editor, The Oregonian, Portland, vice president; Karla
Garrett Harshaw, editor, Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun and senior editor, Cox
Community Newspapers, secretary; and Rick Rodriguez, executive editor, The Sacramento
(Calif.) Bee, treasurer; in ASNE’s leadership.
ASNE, founded in 1922, with
about 850 members, is the main organization of the directing editors of daily
newspapers in the Americas. The organization is leading efforts to increase
diversity in America’s newsrooms, bolster media credibility and improve high
school journalism.
