2002 Institute for Journalism
Excellence Fellows Announced
June 25, 2002
RESTON, Va. – Twenty journalism
professors are working as reporters, photographers, copy editors and online
producers at daily newspapers this summer as part of an intensive ASNE program
which strengthens ties between educators and editors.
The fellows in the Institute
for Journalism Excellence represent colleges and universities around the country.
“Educators, editors and
the industry benefit immensely from the six-week residency,” said Jennie Buckner,
chair of the ASNE Education for Journalism Committee and executive editor of
The Charlotte Observer. “Educators go back in to the classroom with a renewed
knowledge of innovations in newspaper journalism, particularly at a time when
the industry is undergoing much change. Editors develop a better understanding
of journalism education and develop invaluable contacts for jobs and internships.”
The Institute, now in its
eighth year, is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, based
in Miami.
“Good newsrooms and good
classrooms can help each other. This program proves it,” said Eric Newton, Knight
Foundation director of journalism initiatives.
