Charlotte H. Hall, editor
of the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel, was elected treasurer-designate of the American
Society of Newspaper Editors during its fall board meeting, in Springfield,
Ohio, on Oct. 1. Hall will become treasurer of the group in April at the annual
convention, and will rise through the officer ranks each year until reaching
the ASNE presidency in April 2008.
"I'm honored and humbled
to be chosen for leadership in ASNE, which plays such a vital role in guarding
America's First Amendment freedoms and advancing journalism, Hall said. "I look
forward to serving our members and speaking out on the wide range of issues
of interest to them, from diversity and readership to newsroom ethics and credibility."
ASNE President Karla Garrett
Harshaw, editor, Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun and senior editor, Cox Community
Newspapers, said, "I'm delighted that Charlotte Hall will be an ASNE officer.
She certainly deserves it. She's very dedicated and hard-working and pleasant.
Her selection reflects the high regard in which she is held by her colleagues."
Hall joins Harshaw; Rick
Rodriguez, executive editor, The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee, vice president; David
Zeeck, executive editor, The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash., secretary; and Gilbert
Bailon, editor, Al Dia, Dallas, treasurer, in ASNE's leadership.
ASNE, founded in 1922, with
about 750 members, is the main organization of the directing editors of daily
newspapers in the Americas. The organization is leading efforts to increase
diversity in America's newsrooms, bolster media credibility and improve high
school journalism.
