The board of directors of
the American Society of Newspaper Editors appointed Kenneth E. Tingley, managing
editor of The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y., to fill a vacancy on the board.
Tingley has been a member
of ASNE since 2000. He was named to the top newsroom position at The Post-Star
in January 1999. He had previously worked as the sports editor there since 1988
and before that at newspapers in Kingsport, Tenn., Oneonta, N.Y., Plattsburgh,
N.Y. and Ashland, Ky.
Tingley replaces David Yarnold,
formerly editor of the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, who left the newspaper
industry recently to work for Environmental Defense and is therefore no longer
eligible for a seat on the board. Tingley will serve on the board until ASNE’s
convention in 2006, when he will be eligible to seek election.
The American Society of
Newspaper Editors, with about 750 members, is the principal organization of
American newspaper editors. It is active in a number of areas, including open
government, freedom of the press, journalism credibility and ethics, newsroom
management, diversity and readership.
