ELMHURST, ILL. - The top three seeds in the Mid-Con Women’s Soccer Championship each placed five players on the 2005 Women’s Soccer All-Conference teams, as voted on by the head coaches from each participating institution. Oakland, the conference co-champion and top seed in the Championship, placed three players on the first team as well as having Kristi Swaving named Offensive Player of the Year. The other major award winners are 2005 Defensive Player of the Year Gentry Detter of Oral Roberts and 2005 Newcomer of the Year Ashley Hoch of Western Illinois. The 2005 Co-Coaches of the Year are Brian Stock of Southern Utah and Stephen Anthony of Valparaiso.
Swaving was an offensive star for the Golden Grizzlies this season, tallying 12 goals and 27 points to top the Mid-Con leaderboard. In league play, the senior forward was just as effective as she posted league-highs of six goals, 13 points and 40 shots. Her two goals in late October against Centenary clinched a playoff spot for the Golden Grizzlies. She also posted two game-winning goals this season. Now a four-time All-Conference honoree, Swaving’s career numbers place her third on the Mid-Con charts in goals and points.
Detter, who was also the 2004 Defensive Player of the Year, had another strong season in the backline for Oral Roberts. The junior defender was consistently matched up against the top offensive players in the Mid-Con. She also showed her offensive prowess as she posted 14 points, which is ninth in the conference and is tied for the Mid-Con lead in assists with six. The three-time All-Conference honoree and Sept. 26 Defensive Player of the Week was a key member in a defense that posted a 1.50 goals against average in league play.
Hoch made quite an impact in her rookie season on her way to winning the Newcomer of the Year award. The freshman midfielder led the Westerwinds in conference play with three goals and 10 points. Her numbers tied her for third in goals and placed her second in points in the Mid-Con. Hoch’s efforts were key to Western Illinois posting its best Mid-Con record in school history and earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2003.
After such a competitive regular season, its not a surprise that there are Co-Coaches of the Year. Southern Utah’s Brian Stock led his squad to its best record in Mid-Con play (3-1-2) and overall (7-3-6). The Thunderbirds had the best defense in the Mid-Con, allowing five goals in conference play and 14 overall, which translates to a 0.80 goals against average. Valparaiso’s Stephen Anthony led the Crusaders to a share of their first-ever regular season crown and 10 wins overall. The wins total tied the school record.
OU tied Valparaiso and Oral Roberts with three first team selections. The Golden Grizzlies had Swaving, junior defender Cat Panabaker (0 goals-0 assists-0 points) and junior forward Marianne Samdal (6-5-17), while Valpo’s representatives are senior defender Emily King (7-5-19), sophomore goalkeeper Erin Murray (1.14 GAA, 64) and freshman defender Jackie Thomas (0-0-0). The Golden Eagles placed Detter, senior midfielder Heather Hall (5-3-13) and senior forward Jessica Kellogg (9-5-23) on the first team list. Western Illinois had two first team honorees in Hoch and sophomore midfielder/defender Bess Rapp, (4-2-10) while Mid-Con Championship participant Southern Utah had one first-teamer in senior midfielder Tara Olson (6-3-15).
All Mid-Con second team selections include: Oakland freshman forward Jessica Boyle (2-2-6), Valparaiso freshman forward Kendall Brown (10-4-24), Southern Utah senior defender Liz Browning (0-0-0), Southern Utah sophomore goalkeeper Holly Davis (0.81 GAA, 88 saves), IUPUI sophomore defender Lisa Gebhard (0-0-0), Western Illinois goalkeeper Loes Geurts (1.22 GAA, 55 saves), Southern Utah sophomore forward Catherine Johnson (4-1-9), Valparaiso freshman forward Lori Johnson (6-2-14), Southern Utah junior midfielder Dani Lavigne (3-0-6), IUPUI sophomore midfielder Sheri Levack (0-3-3), Centenary junior defender/midfielder Lauren Mills (1-0-2), Oakland senior midfielder Silje Peltopera (1-4-6), Oral Roberts junior midfielder/defender Tamara Waller (2-0-4) and Western Illinois freshman forward Katelyn Wisner (7-5-19).
