NCAA Golf Regional: Southern Utah's Ebalo Finishes 97th, IUPUI's Shafer and Darrow end careers on high note

Southern Utah's Kenny Ebalo

IUPUI's Adam Darrow

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Southern Utah’s Kenny Ebalo shot a final-round 76 Saturday to finish at 226 and in a tie for 97th at the NCAA West Regional golf tournament, which was played at the par 70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.

Ebalo, the first Thunderbird ever to compete at an NCAA Regional, finished 24 shots behind medalist Rob Grube of host Stanford, who shot a final-round 65 to move up six spots and claim the individual championship. Starting on the back nine, Ebalo played even par over the first eight holes before bogeying 18 and one, then taking a double bogey on the par-three third.

“Kenny started out well today but got into a little trouble on 18 then it kind of snowballed on him,” SUU Coach Richard Church said. “This has been a good experience for him though, something for him to built on for next year.”

Church also announced Ebalo has been granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA because of an injury-shortened sophomore campaign.

“We’re excited to get Kenny back for another season,” the coach noted. “He’s one of the best, if not the best, players we’ve ever had at Southern Utah and to get him that year back just made us a whole lot better heading into next season.”

Ebalo finished tied with Washington’s Zach Bixler, New Mexico State’s Danny Bowen, Central Connecticut’s Peter Catanzaro and Fresno State’s Mark Modglin.

SOUTH BEND, IND. -- IUPUI senior golfers Drew Shafer (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) and Adam Darrow (Granger, Ind./South Bend Clay) finished their careers in record setting fashion in the NCAA Central Regional Saturday afternoon.

In addition to tying the school 18-hole record with a 66 in the final round, Shafer's scoring average this season was the best in school history. His 222 for the tournament allowed him to finish the season with 2,007 strokes in 27 rounds. That gave him a 74.33 scoring average for the year, eking out the record by a scant 0.03 or the equivalent of less than one shot. His also finished his career with a 75.77 scoring average, third-best in school history.

Darrow ended his career as IUPUI's career scoring leader. His 230 in the Regional tournament gave him 4,960 competitive strokes for his career during 66 rounds. That left Darrow with a 75.15 career average, 0.24 better than second place. His 74.14 average this season is third-best in school history.
