ELMHURST, ILL. - The Oral Roberts men’s tennis team, coming off its fifth consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Championship title a year ago and a successful fall season, are favored to add a record-tying seventh title to its collection as the Golden Eagles stand atop the Mid-Con Men’s Tennis Preseason Poll. The voting panel is comprised of the league’s seven head coaches, who could not vote for their own team.
ORU received four of the seven first-place votes en route to 34 points. Valparaiso, the runner-up at the Mid-Con Championship a season ago, garnered two first-place votes as it amassed 28 points to come in second, while there was a tie for third as Chicago State and IUPUI both totalled 21 points. Western Illinois received the final first-place vote as it ended up with 19 points, while UMKC (15) and Centenary (9) round out the voting.
Oral Roberts head coach Chris Milliron will rely on a pair of talented returnees to lead the push for the title. Tyrone Hill and Cuan Farquharson are returning All Mid-Con honorees who have played a large role in the success of the Golden Eagles in their brief careers. They will be aided by Alex Dargel and Clemons Geercken, both of whom played well during the fall season.
Valparaiso will look to take home its first-ever men’s tennis title after coming in second on three occasions. The Crusaders return All Mid-Con performers Nic Kooyers and Joe Venegas, as well as talented performers Mike Shideler and Mike Wagner. Dan Brunette will look to continue his solid play as he recorded a team-best 6-3 mark during the fall campaign.
Chicago State hopes to carry the momentum of a strong fall season to the top of the Mid-Con standings. Leading the way are All Mid-Con honorees Prabowo and Prakoso Imanuel. Prakoso was a two-time Player of the Week in the fall as he amassed a 12-3 record, while Prabowo was named the Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year a season ago and was 5-3 during the fall. CSU will also rely Abram Mamahit and Jonathan Sutjaidi, both of which also had strong fall campaigns.
IUPUI will look to break through to the top of the Mid-Con on the strength of several returnees. Joe Harvath will lead the Jaguars after posting a team-best four individual wins during the fall season. He will be joined by fellow upperclassmen Greg Fallowfield, Ronnie Pedro and Ross Gehlhausen to give IUPUI depth in both singles and doubles competition.
Western Illinois head coach Michael Hunt will look to mold a young squad into a contender for the Mid-Con title this season. Hunt will rely on returning All Mid-Con performer Justin Junck, as well as Sean Ragee-Nelson and Mike Tiu for experience. Newcomer Martin Boström will also look to continue his solid first season at WIU after a 6-2 performance during the fall.
UMKC will look to turn the corner and shake up the Mid-Con standings with a solid group of returnees. Grant Gelinas and Richard Harrison will provide leadership and experience after being named All Mid-Con performers a year ago. John and Justin Ghani and Joe Kane will provide the Kangaroos with key depth throughout the spring campaign.
Centenary aims to break through and get to the Mid-Con Championship on the strength of a solid core of players. Josh Pinto will lead the Gents after a fall season in which he posted a 3-2 mark against solid competition. Head Coach Larry Jacobs will also look to Arthur Okura and Russ Patrick to add much needed experience to the Centenary push.
