ELMHURST, ILL. — Oakland, which took home the regular-season title for the fifth time in school history, was rewarded for a solid regular-season with two of the Mid-Continent Conference’s four major men’s soccer awards, including Mid-Con Defensive Player of the Year Jeff Wiese and Mid-Con Coach of the Year Gary Parson. Regular-season runner-up Oral Roberts garnered the remaining major awards in Mid-Con Offensive Player of the Year Dave Leung and Newcomer of the Year Carlos Pinto. Leung and Wiese are both repeat winners from the 2004 campaign. The Golden Grizzlies and Golden Eagles tied for the most players on the all-conference teams with five selections apiece.
Leung is the first player to repeat as Offensive Player of the Year since Cleveland’s State’s Nick Stavrou accomplished the feat in 1989 and 1990. Leung is the top offensive threat for the Golden Eagles, who are 15th in the NCAA in scoring offense. The senior midfielder is the conference’s leading scorer with 22 points via nine goals and four assists. He also tops the conference in shots with 67. Against league foes, Leung accounted for two goals, including the game-winning tally against Valparaiso, and an assist. Leung, who was the Sept. 6 Offensive Player of the Week, has two multi-goal games this season which includes his second career hat trick.
Wiese continues to prove why he is now a four-time all-star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year after posting a league-best 0.53 goals against average in conference play to go along with an .857 save percentage and a shutout. He is just the sixth player in league history to win first team All-Conference accolades four times in his career. Overall, Wiese is third in the Mid-Con in goals against average (1.26) and save percentage (.790). He is also fourth in saves per game (4.65) and fifth in shutouts (2). Wiese, a two-time Defensive Player of the Week this season, is fourth on the Mid-Con career list with 337 saves and is fifth with 20 shutouts.
Pinto garners Newcomer of the Year accolades after finishing the regular-season fourth in the Mid-Con in points with 18. His six assists are tied for the league lead, while his six goals are tied for fifth. In conference play, the freshman midfielder/forward rippled the back of the net twice and dished out a trio of assists en route to seven points, which tied for fourth in the Mid-Con.
Parsons is honored by his peers for the first time in his career after leading the Golden Grizzlies to their fifth regular-season title since 2000. OU’s five regular-season crowns tie Eastern Illinois for the most in Mid-Con history. In his 25th season at the helm, Parsons led Oakland to a 9-8-0 overall record with a 5-1-0 mark in the conference play. Among OU’s nine wins this season is a 2-1 victory at then-#18/21 Cincinnati. The Golden Grizzlies lead the Mid-Con in goals against average (1.24) and are tied for fourth in goals (22).
Oral Roberts landed a league-best four recipients on the All-Conference first team, led by Leung, Pinto, senior forward Jorge Flor (8 goals-5 assists-21 points) and sophomore defender Jordan Tatum (3-0-6). Oakland placed three student-athletes on the first team, including Wiese, four-time all-star Chris Edwards (6-1-13) and sophomore defender Adam Brent (0-0-0). Western Illinois also had three representatives on the first team in junior midfielders Nowaf Jaman (8-1-17) and Kosuke Kimura (1-6-8) and freshman defender Luke Greenwell (0-0-0), while IUPUI sophomore midfielder Vangel Nacovski (7-5-19) rounds out the first team selections.
The All-Conference second team honorees include: Oakland defender Wes Allen (0-1-1), UMKC defender Kyle Brewer (0-2-2), Valparaiso forward D.J. Catrow (6-4-16), UMKC midfielder Joe Chirco (1-1-3), Oral Roberts midfielder Jason Nussbaum (0-3-3), Valparaiso keeper Jeff Oleck (1.54 goals against average, 5 shutouts), Valparaiso midfielder Tyler Pagano (0-1-1), Oakland defender Brady Vance (1-4-6), Centenary midfielder Aaron Volanski (5-3-13), IUPUI midfielder Chris Wey (5-4-14) and Western Illinois forward Matt Wieclaw (4-3-11).
