KANSAS CITY, MO. — Top-seeded Oakland (10-8-0, 5-1-0 Mid-Con) and third-seeded Western Illinois (5-9-4, 3-2-1) earned semifinal victories at the 2005 Mid-Continent Conference Men’s Soccer Championship and will square-off for the Mid-Con title at noon Sunday at Swope Park in Kansas City, Mo. The Golden Grizzlies earned a berth in the final with a 4-2 victory over fourth-seeded Valparaiso (6-10-2, 3-2-1), while the Leathernecks clinched a spot in the Championship match after an exciting 4-3 penalty kick decision over No. 2 seed Oral Roberts (9-4-3, 4-1-1). WIU and ORU played to a 1-1 tie before needing penalty kicks to decide the winner. The winner of the Championship match will earn a berth into the NCAA Men’s College Cup.

#1 Oakland 4, #4 Valparaiso 2 (Box Score)
With two of the top keepers in the league on the field, the first Mid-Con semifinal was expected to be a low-scoring affair. That was not the case as Oakland scored twice in each half to come away with the 4-2 win over Valparaiso.

Valparaiso jumped out to the early lead with a goal by Jon Brighton in the 11th minute. However, Oakland knotted the score at 1-1 on a Ben Gearhart tally at the 16:26 mark, only to see the Crusaders regain the lead 20 seconds later thanks a D.J. Catrow-to-Tim Bowington goal. OU took command of the game as the Golden Grizzlies scored three unanswered goals in the final 70 minutes, led by Jim Denk’s tally in the 22nd minute. Four-time all-star pick Chris Edwards scored the game-winning goal at the 59:23 mark, while Gearhart, who also assisted on Edwards’ goal, added his second goal of the game as an insurance tally in the 64th minute.

Edwards had also earned an assist on Denk’s goal to give him three points on the day. Valpo’s Catrow notched two assists, while keeper Jeff Oleck made seven saves in the loss.

#3 Western Illinois 1, #2 Oral Roberts 1 (2 OT) (WIU advances on PKs, 4-3) (Box Score)
In a thrilling second semifinal, the two squads played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and a pair of overtime sessions before No. 3 Western Illinois used a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks to edge second-seeded Oral Roberts. ORU outshot Western Illinois by a 12-7 margin, but could only manage to convert on one opportunity.

With time winding down in the opening period, Nick Bohnenkamp scored his fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute to give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead. Jeff Wakeland and Nowaf Jaman earned assists on the tally. Oral Roberts came back to tie the game at 1-1 on Jorge Flor’s ninth goal of the season at the 54:39 thanks to assists by Eric Mattison and Dave Leung.

The defenses then took over as neither team could score in the final 35 minutes of regulation or in two overtime periods. After the first round of shootouts, the teams were still tied after converting on two attempts apiece. In sudden death, both teams scored on their first attempts before Devin Flahive rippled the back of the net to give WIU the 4-3 win.
