Valparaiso leads Mid-Con in all-conference selections

Valparaiso's Katie Bova

Western Illinois' Jennifer Alexander

Valparaiso's Liz Mikos

Western Illinois' Sarah Trimpe

After clinching its third-straight regular-season title and the top seed in the Mid-Continent Conference Championship, Valparaiso was rewarded with a league-high six players on the 2005 Mid-Con Volleyball All-Conference teams. The voting panel is comprised of the head coaches from each participating institution. Valparaiso also garnered two individual awards as Katie Bova was named Setter of the Year and Liz Mikos was honored as a Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Oral Roberts’ Ori Zuzic was named the Player of the Year, while Western Illinois collected three major awards as Jennifer Alexander earned Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors, Sarah Trimpe was named Freshman of the Year and head coach Kym McKay was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Zuzic becomes the fourth Oral Roberts player to win Player of the Year honors after finishing second in the Mid-Con in kills (4.34) and ranking third in NCAA in aces per game (0.83). In league play, she averaged 1.04 aces per game, nearly one full ace better than second place. The former All-Freshman selection, two-time 2005 Offensive Player of the Week and now three time All-Conference selection also moved up the career Mid-Con charts this season. She is now the all-time leader in aces (208), second in career kills (1,652) and is just four shy of the single-season record for aces with 94.

Bova has been a consistent force in the Crusaders three-year run at the top of the Mid-Con. Now a two-time first team selection and the 2004 Setter of the Year, Bova led the Mid-Con in assists with 11.63 per game. She also showed her all-around game by ranking ninth in the Mid-Con with 0.32 aces per game and 10th in digs per game (3.46). She becomes the third player in Mid-Con history to win two Setter of the Year awards (Katy Kampschroeder and Anna Moreno).

After such a competitive season, it’s no surprise that there are Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Western Illinois’ Jennifer Alexander was a key component in the Westerwinds’ push to their second-consecutive postseason appearance. She leads the Mid-Con and ranks 29th in the NCAA with 5.27 digs per game. Now a three-time All-Conference selection and the 2003 Freshman of the Year, she became the first WIU player to surpass 1,500 career digs earlier this season. Valparaiso’s Liz Mikos has been a strong front line player for the Crusaders, ranking second in the Mid-Con in blocks with 1.39 per game. Now a three-time All Mid-Con honoree, her defensive presence has been key in Valparaiso’s 40-1 league record the past three seasons.

Trimpe made quite an impact in her rookie season as she helped lead Western Illinois its its first-ever back-to-back Mid-Con Championship appearances. She proved to be a solid tablesetter as she ranks fourth in the Mid-Con with 10.50 assists per game. She also showed she can win key points as she averaged 0.41 aces per game, which is third on the league leaderboard. Her efforts helped WIU post 17 wins this season, its highest total in 18 years. She becomes the third WIU player to win the award in the past four seasons, joining Jessica Manning (2002) and Alexander (2003).

In her fourth season at the helm, McKay led her squad to several school-best performances. The Westerwinds recorded its best-ever Mid-Con record (11-3), its most wins since 1987 (17) and the first-ever back-to-back appearances in the Mid-Con Championship. McKay also led her squad to a 15-7 finish after a 2-6 start and becomes the first coach in school history to receive Coach of the Year honors.

Valparaiso and Western Illinois each placed two players on the All-Conference first team. The Crusaders had Bova and sophomore outside hitter Amy Palash (337 digs, 329 kills)on the first team list, while the Westerwinds landed sophomore rightside hitter Ashley Baker (275 kills, 171 digs, 33 aces) and senior middle hitter Jenna Yurs (285 kills, 174 blocks) on the squad. Zuzic, IUPUI senior middle hitter Tracy Bailey (338 kills, 291 digs, 94 blocks) and UMKC junior outside hitter Vanessa Portela (411 kills, 164 digs) round out the first team.

Valparaiso placed a league-high three players on the second team in Mikos, junior middle blocker Jessie Fox (260 kills, 124 blocks) and senior rightside hitter Lauren Moulton (265 kills, 87 blocks). Alexander, Oral Roberts junior libero Cris Alves (521 digs, 54 aces), IUPUI senior libero Erin Jones (596 digs) and Oakland senior outside hitter/middle hitter Heather Lippert (348 kills, 138 blocks) also garnered second team accolades.
