Valparaiso and Oral Roberts to meet in Championship match for third-straight season

For the third consecutive season, Valparaiso and Oral Roberts will meet in the Mid-Continent Conference Volleyball Championship match. Second-seeded Oral Roberts posted a come-from-behind victory over third-seeded Western Illinois, 3-1, while top-seeded Valparaiso tallied a 3-0 win over No. 4 IUPUI.

The Crusaders and Golden Eagles will meet in the Championship match Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Athletics-Recreation Center on the campus of Valparaiso University. The match can be heard via the internet at http://www.valpo.edu/wvur. The winner of the Mid-Con Championship will earn the conference’s automatic bid into the 2005 NCAA Tournament.

#2 Oral Roberts 3, #3 Western Illinois 1 (26-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-22)
After dropping the first game of the match, second-seeded Oral Roberts rebounded to win the next three sets to advance to the Mid-Con Championship match for the ninth-straight time with a 3-1 win over Western Illinois. The back and forth match saw 19 ties and nine lead changes over the four games.

Jackie Oliveira and Ori Zuzic were a potent duo for the Golden Eagles. They combined for 41 kills and 39 digs to lead the ORU effort. Cris Alves also had a strong defensive match as the junior libero recorded a team-high 21 digs. Zuzic also reached a career milestone in the fourth game with her match-clinching kill. She passed former ORU star Patricia Menezes to become the Mid-Con’s all-time leader with 1,670 markers.

Western Illinois was led by Jennifer Alexander’s 32 digs and Amy Sauerwein’s 23 digs and nine kills.

Oral Roberts improves to 22-10 on the season, while Western Illinois ends its 2005 campaign at 17-14.

#2 #1 Valparaiso 3, #4 IUPUI 0 (30-23, 30-22, 30-21)
Top-seeded Valparaiso advanced to its third consecutive Mid-Con Championship match with a 3-0 win over IUPUI.

The Crusaders used a strong defensive performance and timely kills to down the Jaguars. Valpo’s 14 total blocks tied the three-game Mid-Con Championship record, while Jessie Fox tied the Tournament record with 11 blocks. Her block total also sets the school mark for a three-game match. Brittany Marks also had a solid effort for Valpo with 23 digs.

Casey Chrzastowski led the IUPUI effort with a match-high 15 kills to go along with 17 digs.

Valparaiso now stands at 25-6 on the 2005 season, while IUPUI finishes up its 2005 campaign with a 14-17 mark.
