MACOMB, ILL. - The final round of play at the 2005 Days Inn Mid-Continent Conference Men’s & Women’s Golf Championships at the Harry Mussato Golf Course on the campus of Western Illinois saw IUPUI and Oral Roberts win the men’s and women’s titles, respectively. The Jaguars second title overall and first since 2002 came down to the wire, while the Golden Eagles, the only school to ever win a Mid-Con women’s golf title, led wire-to-wire.

IUPUI, who entered the final round in first place, held off challenges by Southern Utah (905), Western Illinois (906) and UMKC (907) to claim its second title in four years. The Jags carded a 902 for the three-round event to edge the Thunderbirds by three strokes. The T-Birds jumped from fifth place to second Tuesday on the strength of a final-round 298, tying Oakland’s first round as the best by any team in the tournament. One stroke separated fifth-place from sixth-place, as Oral Roberts (911) bested Oakland (912). Centenary (927) and Chicago State (1,028) rounded out the men’s field.

The final round of play brought about no changes to the women’s team standings, as the Golden Eagles (939) topped second place Oakland (989) by 50 strokes. Western Illinois came in third place with a score of 1,005, followed by UMKC (1,012) and IUPUI (1,046).

The men’s team title came down to the final nine holes, but the individual title could not be decided in regulation play, as Oakland’s Brian Stuard and Southern Utah’s Kenny Ebalo remained knotted up at 216 after 54-holes. Stuard birdied the playoff hole to win the top medalist and Player of the Year accolades, after placing his second shot on the par 4 playoff hole less than three feet from the cup. Adam Darrow (219) represented the champion Jaguars on the All-Conference First Team after a third place finish. Joining the tourney’s Top 3 finishers on the All-Conference First Team were Centenary’s Brett Kaufman (222) and UMKC’s Alan Johnson (223). The Newcomer of the Year awards race was just as tight as the Player of the Year, as UMKC’s Brian Donnelly, Oral Roberts’ Daniel Coughlin and Southern Utah’s Eric Nilsson all took a share of the award after shooting a 228.

The Men’s All-Conference Second Team consisted of Oakland’s Jonathan Pauli (226), Western Illinois’ Tim Streng (224) and Dan Votja (226) and Oral Roberts’ Dax Murray (225) and Andreas Christensson (226).

The tournament’s top three women’s finishers all tallied 75, the second best round of the tourney, during their final 18 holes. Oral Roberts’ Candice Satow was the top medalist and the Mid-Con Women’s Player of the Year after posting a 232 during the 54-hole event. Satow, a senior and two-time Player of the Year recipient, became the first golfer in Mid-Con history (men or women) to be selected to the All-Conference First Team four times.

Western Illinois’ Janelle Bush and ORU’s Pamela Ontiveros both finished four strokes behind Satow at 236 to tie for second place. Ontiveros was also the Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year award winner. ORU’s Toni Pyrum and Jessica Gibson joined the Top 3 finishers on the All-Conference First Team after tying for fifth place with a 240 total.

The Women’s All-Conference Second Team was made up of Oakland’s Christina Cibrario (244), Patricia Ellsworth (246) and Stacey Goins (247), as well as Oral Roberts’ Lilia Maeda (245) and IUPUI’s Adrienne Mayhew (248).

IUPUI’s John Andrews and Oral Roberts’ Lance Watson were the Mid-Con Men’s and Women’s Coaches of the Year, respectively.
