Southern Utah’s men’s team and Western Illinois’ women’s squad were the title winners at the 2005 Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of UMKC in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday afternoon.

The Thunderbirds and Westerwinds were atop the leaderboard from start to finish at the three-day event, as SUU captured its second straight title and third overall. WIU earned its second championship overall and first since 1996.

The Thunderbird men notched 243 points, topping second place Western Illinois (203) by 40 tallies. Oral Roberts (168) and UMKC (93) each moved up one spot on day three to notch third and fourth place, respectively. Valparaiso finished fifth with 52 points, followed by Chicago State (47).

The Westerwinds clinched the title with 232 points, but Oral Roberts (220), which started the day in third place, made a run at the top spot on the final day of competition close. Southern Utah, which won the crown in 2003 and 2004, finished third with 134 tallies. Valparaiso (112), UMKC (106) and Chicago State (9) round out the women’s field.

Southern Utah took home two of the major men’s award on Saturday, as Steve Hansen started his day by winning the 110-meter hurdles (14.68) and ended it as the 2005 Mid-Con Men’s Athlete of the Year. SUU head coach Eric Houle was Coach of the Year for the second year in a row and third time in his career. The Newcomer of the Year award went to Chicago State’s Stephon Harden, who took home gold in the triple jump (14.47m) on Saturday.

The women’s award winners followed the same pattern, as the champion Westerwinds took home the women’s Athlete of the Year and women’s Coach of the Year awards. Aubrey Martin was the Women’s Athlete of the Year after winning the shot put (16.17m) and the discus (46.34m), while WIU’s Mike Stevenson was the Mid-Con Coach of the Year for the first time ever on the women’s side. Valparaiso’s Melanie Wilson took the Newcomer of the Year honors after a third place finish in the long jump (5.51m).
