He was then elevated to the position of Assistant Athletic Director, where he headed up efforts ranging from event management to compliance. He served as the school’s Interim Athletic Director during the 1998-99 school year, and when he left the university, held the title of Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations. He chaired the Mid-Con Men’s Basketball Committee while at UMKC, and was presented with the 1995 Athletic Department Service Award by UMKC.
Grom joined the UMKC athletic staff after working for three years at the Big Eight (now Big XII) Conference office, where he was an assistant on the league’s service bureau. He helped in the publicity of all men’s and women’s sports, served as a publications editor, and was an assistant media coordinator at the Big Eight men’s basketball tournament as well.
Grom graduated from the University of Kansas in 1984, receiving a bachelor of sciences degree in journalism.
