Mid-Continent Coference Ed Grom, Associate Commissioner
Ed Grom

  • Email: grom@mid-con.com

An experienced individual in many fields of college athletics, Ed Grom enters his seventh year as the Associate Commissioner at the Mid-Continent Conference. He joined the Mid-Con league office in November 1999.

Grom shifted focus in day-to-day responsibilities at the Mid-Con in 2001. Formerly responsible for all of the league’s NCAA compliance efforts, Grom is now managing the Mid-Con’s championship efforts. He oversees the Mid-Con’s television package and is the conference’s primary liaison with the Mid-Con’s marketing group, Strategic Marketing Affiliates.

Grom also oversees the sports committees as well as the league’s officials. He authored the Mid-Con’s Policy and Procedures Manual, and was formerly a member of the NCAA’s Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet. Grom presently serves as an NCAAA peer reviewer.

Grom came to the Mid-Con after serving in various roles in the athletic department at conference member UMKC for 12 years. He started out at UMKC in its sports information department and worked in that role for five years. He was then elevated to the position of Assistant Athletic Director, where he headed up efforts ranging from event management to compliance. He served as the school’s Interim Athletic Director during the 1998-99 school year, and when he left the university, held the title of Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations. He chaired the Mid-Con Men’s Basketball Committee while at UMKC, and was presented with the 1995 Athletic Department Service Award by UMKC.

Grom joined the UMKC athletic staff after working for three years at the Big Eight (now Big XII) Conference office, where he was an assistant on the league’s service bureau. He helped in the publicity of all men’s and women’s sports, served as a publications editor, and was an assistant media coordinator at the Big Eight men’s basketball tournament as well.

Grom graduated from the University of Kansas in 1984, receiving a bachelor of sciences degree in journalism. While at Kansas, he played on the Jayhawk golf squad, was the summer sports editor for the University Daily Kansan, and worked as a stringer for the Wichita Eagle-Beacon. He began his collegiate career at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill.

Grom, wife Karen and sons Jake and Jack reside in Naperville, Ill.
