Oakland wins seventh-consecutive Mid-Con Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The Oakland University men’s and women’s swim squads claimed their seventh-consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Swimming & Diving Championships with a dominating performance at the IUPUI Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind.

The OU men finished with 1,013.0 points, just 29 points shy of the Championships record, on their way to the crown. The 533.0-point margin over second-place IUPUI (480.0) is the largest margin of victory in conference history. Western Illinois checked in at the third position with 433.5 points, while Eastern Illinois (421.5), Centenary (344.0), Valparaiso (303.0) and South Dakota State (254.0) round out the men’s side of the standings.

Oakland’s women’s squad accumulated 970.0 points to top Eastern Illinois which finished second with 583.5 tallies. Third place belonged to Western Illinois with 548.0 points, while IUPUI (348.5) and Centenary (316.0) checked in behind the Westerwinds. South Dakota State (241.5) and Valparaiso (223.5) completed the women’s race.

Oakland’s Chris Sullivan, who set three individual records and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in three events, was named the Swimmer of the Year. Western Illinois took home two of the major awards on the men’s side as Eric Campbell and Ryan Wichman were named Diver of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. Men’s Coach of the Year honors were given to IUPUI’s Jim Shuck.

OU swept the women’s awards as Melissa Jaeger was honored as the Swimmer of the Year, Linda Keskey took home Diver of the Year award, Sophia Gustafsson garnered Newcomer of the Year accolades and head coach Pete Hovland was selected as the Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career.

The final day of competition saw Oakland win all but two events. Keskey’s mark of 244.70 in the women’s one-meter diving event gave OU its first individual title of the night. Gustafsson followed with a record-setting time of 17:06.13 in the 1,650 freestyle, touching the wall more than two seconds ahead of the previous mark (17:08.66). Western Illinois’ Wichman won the 1,650 freestyle on the men’s side with a time of 16:04.99, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of the competition.

Oakland would regain momentum in the 200 backstroke as Amanda Burwell and Mike Templeton took home the titles. Burwell finished with a time of 2:07.22, while Templeton won the gold with a mark of 1:48.89. Riley Rigoli would keep OU on the championship track as she finished first in the 100 freestyle (51.79), while Sullivan not only set his third record of the Championships with a time of 44.33 in the 100 freestyle, he also made the NCAA “B” standard qualifying time.

OU’s Kim Bacon would add another individual title to the Golden Grizzlies tally with a victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.79), while Zoltan Horvath would follow suit in the men’s event after topping the competition in 2:04.76. Jaeger and Aaron Holdsworth would then sweep the 200 butterfly events for the Golden Grizzlies. Jaeger earned a trip to the top of the podium after finishing in 2:02.61, while Holdsworth continued the record-setting trend with a time of 1:49.92.

The Golden Grizzlies would wrap up the Championships with victories in two of the day’s final three events. Western Illinois took home another diving title as Campbell bested the competition in the three-meter diving event with a score of 322.80. OU’s 400 freestyle relay teams would then cap the Championships with victories. The women’s squad swam the event in 3:29.05, while the men broke Wright State’s mark in 1991 with an NCAA “B” standard time of 2:59.18.
