Media Relations Assistant
The Mid-Continent Conference, an NCAA Division I athletics conference headquartered in Elmhurst, Ill., is seeking an individual to serve an assistantship in its media relations office. This is a 10-month position, running from August 1, 2006, through May 31, 2007.
The successful candidate will assist the Director of Media Relations in all facets of promoting the league, its nine member institutions and its 19 championship sports. Responsibilities will include: serving as the primary contact for selected league-sponsored sports, writing and editing of press releases and publications, updating the league's record book, maintaining the league's photo gallery and a variety of other assigned duties. The most qualified individual will have experience in desktop publishing (PageMaker, Photoshop), some knowledge of web site maintenance and an understanding of sports writing and statistics. Candidates should possess strong interpersonal, communication and writing skills, and should be considering a career in athletic media relations.
The assistant should have a bachelor's degree or be working toward a degree in communications, public relations, sports management or a related field. Previous experience in a collegiate media relations environment is preferred. Candidates should be proficient with a variety of computer programs, including Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel), Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Photoshop and StatCrew statistics programs. Weekend and evening hours will be required, as will some travel to selected conference championships.
The stipend for the 10-month position is $13,000.
