... from miles away. The roar of the oversized exhaust... The ear-rattling boom of subwoofer... The rush of air, as it moves to one side... ... to allow a crappy little Honda Civic get through. It has rusty panels, very badly tinted windows, red LED sidelights, badly fitted bodyskirts, and a spotty pimplehead in the driving seat. I seems to me as though the effort made to make cars look impressive is down to the add-ons glued on to the outside, rather than improving the look of the car itself. I personally think that a car that has been looked after, and has a decent shine on in, and maybe a couple of cosmetic enhancements, looks much better than a car that has bootloads of extras and is 25% rust!! I also don't appreciate illegal cosmetic additions to cars to make them look impressive. Examples are number plates that are either incorrectly spaced or in an illegal typeface, front fog lights that appear to be hardwired to the battery with no 'off' switch, underbody lighting (I mean, please!), sidelight bulbs that have been replaced with coloured LEDs, and rear spoilers that look as though they've been designed by Boeing. Don't they realise that their car looks bloody pathetic?! People who stare at them open-mouthed are not thinking, "Wow, what a fantastic looking car!"... they're thinking "What the f..." But obviously no-one has told them.

My people skills are pretty good, as a number of people have told me. I do, however, have a number of weaknesses in that area... - My first weakness is talking over people when they're already talking to me. I do it to Caroline a lot, and I know it annoys her. Although mostly when I do it, it's time-relevant... so waiting until the other person has finished talking would mean that the moment would have passed, and what I had to say wouldn't have made sense.
- My second weakness is answering questions, even when they're not being asked of me, mainly because I know the answer to the question. This is a subconscious response in most cases, as I'm usually busy concentrating doing something at the time, so I don't actually realise I've done it until after it's done... if that makes sense!
- My third weakness is my tendency to become harsh towards people when they don't understand what I'm trying to tell them. In the past, I've run training courses, and I'd become very tolerant towards people who weren't on the same technical level as me, to the point of annoying techies when I spoke in layman's terms! But, having not run any training courses recently, I've started to become intolerant of the layman again.
In all of the above cases, I don't do it on purpose... it's just something I have to learn to curb.

Yes indeed... we are off the net, as moosical said last night. Our broadband router has gone tits-up. Our network setup is thus: - broadband router/modem - my PC, Caroline's PC, Linux server, Wireless router
- wireless router - laptop, work laptop (wired though, not wireless)
I was messing around with the wireless router, trying to get the PCs on the broadband router to talk to the PCs on the wireless router (which may not even be possible, but hey)... and the broadband router hiccupped - no idea why as I wasn't even working on that one. I rebooted the broadband router, and it won't even boot up. The broadband router/modem was only a cheapo thing, DABSValue to be exact, so I just bought another of the same. It's a newer model, which looks a lot nicer than its predecessor. It isn't going to arrive until Wednesday, so we're off the net until then... except through work. Bah, bottom-biscuits.

Have you ever seen, on Channel 4, the vox-pop-style things they do between programmes sometimes, where they ask celebrities questions, people like Tony Robinson, Jon Snow, Richie Benaud, etc? I saw one on Friday or Saturday which asked, 'How do you want to be remembered when you die?' Richard Whiteley was on this one, in which his answer was, "I'd want to be remembered as the first face on Channel 4." Poignant.
