2006 Mid-Con Cross Country Championships Preview
LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. – The Oral Roberts women and the Southern Utah men took home team titles in the 2006 Mid-Con Cross Country Championships Saturday. The Golden Eagles’ Diana Chelimo won the women’s individual title, while the Thunderbirds’ Jess Baumgartner won the men’s race.
The Oral Roberts women posted a winning score of 42, edging Valparaiso by three points to claim its second title in as many years. Chelimo won the race by three seconds over teammate Faithy Kamangila, who had won the race each of the previous two years. Kamangila passed Valparaiso’s Laura Rolf on the final straightaway to take on runner-up honors.
The three points that separated first and second is tied for the closest team race in Mid-Con history.
On the men’s side, Southern Utah swept the top five spots to post a winning score of 15, the lowest team score in Mid-Con history. It was the Thunderbirds’ ninth title in 10 years.
The junior Baumgartner easily led throughout the whole race, claiming the second individual Mid-Con title of his career.
