Southern Utah advances to Mid-Con softball Championship game; Western Illinois & Oakland to battle for the right to play the T-Birds

| Southern Utah's Marci Pratt | CEDAR CITY, UTAH - After a four-year hiatus, the Southern Utah softball team is returning to the Mid-Continent Conference Softball Championship game. The top-seeded Thunderbirds bested #4 Oakland, 4-1, in the opening game of the tourney and came back with a 9-0 win over third-seeded Western Illinois in the winners’ bracket match-up to punch its title game ticket. The second game on Friday’s docket featured a 3-1 upset win for third-seeded Western Illinois over #2 seed and defending champion Centenary. The Golden Grizzlies then handed Centenary its first ever post-season elimination with a 4-3 victory over the defending champions.

Southern Utah’s Marci Pratt named Mid-Con Softball Player of the Year

| Southern Utah's Marci Pratt | ELMHURST, ILL. - Southern Utah third baseman/catcher Marci Pratt made quite a splash in her first season in a T-Birds uniform as the junior transfer from Dixie State was named the 2006 Mid-Continent Conference Softball Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s head coaches. Oakland took home two major awards as senior pitcher Laura Chomokos was named the Pitcher of the Year, while first-year head coach Glenn MacDonald was selected as the Coach of the Year. Centenary’s Emerald Doria was also honored as she was named the Freshman of the Year. Southern Utah, Valparaiso and Western Illinois each placed a league-best five players on the 2006 All Mid-Con squads. Oakland and Centenary both had four players on the all-star teams, while IUPUI rounded out the lists with three representatives.

Southern Utah claims top seed for the 2006 Mid-Con Softball Championship

| Southern Utah's Marci Pratt | ELMHURST, ILL. - Southern Utah clinched the top seed for the 2006 Mid-Continent Conference Softball Championship by virtue of its fourth-straight regular season crown. The double-elimination tournament will be held Friday, May 12 - Saturday, May 13 at Kathryn Berg Field on the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. The winner of the Mid-Con title will earn the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
