TULSA, OKLA. - After falling on a last-second shot in the Mid-Con Championship game a year ago, top-seeded Oral Roberts redeemed itself with its first-ever Mid-Continent Conference men’s basketball championship with an 85-72 victory over #6 seed Chicago State in the final of the 2006 Toshiba Mid-Continent Conference Men’s Basketball Championship at John Q. Hammons Arena at the UMAC in Tulsa, Okla. The Golden Eagles have earned the conference’s bid into the NCAA Tournament and will find out their opponent when the bracket is announced on Sunday, March 12 at 6 p.m. on CBS. It is ORU’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1984.

The first half proved to be a dogfight as there were five ties and neither team led by more than four. Michael Henderson connected on a jumper with 1:41 remaining to tie the game at 31-31, and then Marin Mulic added a three-pointer to give CSU a three-point advantage. However, ORU cut the halftime deficit to one point thanks to a Mickey Michalec jumper. The two squads traded buckets for the first five of the second period before the Golden Eagles ran off an 18-0 spurt to give ORU a commanding 62-44 lead. Oral Roberts led by as many as 23 in the second frame and finished the contest with a 13 point margin.

Ken Tutt guided the ORU offense with 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting and was 4-for-6 from three-point range on the way to earning Tournament MVP honors. Larry Owens was 6-for-8 from the field en route to 24 points. He also chipped in four rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal. Caleb Green posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. David Holston had a team-best 21 points to lead Chicago State. Tutt was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Green and Owens, as well as CSU’s Parran and IUPUI’s George Hill.

Sixth-seeded Oakland came in as an underdog, but it was the Golden Grizzlies who took home their second Mid-Con tournament title as they defeated top-seeded Western Illinois 65-56 in the 2006 Toshiba Mid-Continent Conference Women’s Championship game, which was held at John Q. Hammons Arena at the UMAC in Tulsa, Okla. OU, which is the lowest seed to win the Mid-Con title, earns its second bid into the NCAA Tournament with the bracket being announced on ESPN Monday, March 13 at 7 p.m. (Eastern).

Western Illinois opened the game with a 6-0 run, but Oakland answered with a 21-4 spurt of their own to take a double-digit lead at 21-10 with 10:21 remaining in the half. WIU would cut the OU advantage to three at 24-21 with an 11-3 run of their own, but a jumper by Lakeshia White and a three-pointer from Anne Hafeli gave the momentum right back to the Golden Grizzlies as they outscored the Westerwinds 7-3 to go into the half up by seven, 31-24.

After trading baskets for the first few minutes of the second stanza, Oakland went on a 7-0 run to take the biggest lead of the contest at 44-32 with 13 minutes left. Western Illinois would start looking more often for Player of the Year Zane Teilane, but Hafeli, Nicole Piggott and White would help the Golden Grizzlies maintain at least a five-point advantage. Piggott’s jumper in the lane with 46 seconds left gave OU an eight point lead and all but clinched the title for OU.

Hafeli was solid throughout the game with 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds on her way to Tournament MVP honors. Piggott added 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists to the Oakland cause. Teilane was stellar as she scored 28 points, including 20 tallies in the second half, grabbed a Championship-record 22 rebounds and tied tournament mark with seven blocks. She also became WIU’s all-time leading scorer during the contest. Samantha Greer and Laura Reeves added seven points apiece for the Westerwinds. Hafeli, Piggott and Teilane were also named to the All-Tournament team, joined by Kia Hayes of IUPUI and Valparaiso’s Tamra Braun.
