Map of Limfjorden

Limfjorden, waterway in northern Denmark that cuts across the entire Danish peninsula and connects the North Sea on the west with the Kattegat Strait on the east. It separates Thisted and Hjørring, the northern provinces of Denmark, from the rest of the peninsula. A straight line drawn from one end of the Limfjorden to the other would extend about 136 km (about 85 mi), but with its twists and curves it is actually much longer. The eastern end is narrow and comparatively straight, but from Ålborg west, the Limfjorden consists of a series of lakelike enlargements connected by narrow passages. There are many irregularly shaped bays, peninsulas, and small islands in this section. The central enlargement is the broad Løgstør. Some of the cities along the Limfjorden are Lemvig, Nykøbing, Thisted, Ålborg, and Hals.
