Trying for Tchaikovsky

Three glimpses into the right-of-passage known as auditioning for NBT’s The Nutcracker

Back in mid-September, Nicky Bowers pinned the No. 100 to the front of her 7-year-old daughter Charlotte’s leotard—a pale pink to offset the girl’s strawberry-blond features. Then Charlotte joined a line of 40 other bare-legged ballerinas who haven’t yet graduated to the tights of a Level One Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT) Academy student. While Nicky waited in NBT’s grand marble lobby, Charlotte and the others disappeared behind a set of tall frosted doors.

Insurgo Theater’s The Crucible

Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible during the era of McCarthy hearings, when accusations of communist ties ran rampant. This play, set around the Salem witch trials in 1692, has become a classic statement against fear-mongering and mob behavior.

Mysterious Milestone

8,000 shows later, the original permanent Cirque du Soleil show continues to confound and amaze

On the evening of Oct. 18, once the audience had been seated—including those who were led by Mystère’s mischief-making clown, Brian Le Petit, to take the scenic route to their seats—the lights dimmed in TI’s Mystère Theatre for the 8,000th time, and the show began.

Rhinestones Are Forever

The Liberace Museum may have closed, but Wayland Pickard keeps the legend alive

In producer Randy Nolen’s new show at the David Saxe theater, Liberace: Music and Memories, Liberace is allowed a few hours from heaven to spend on Earth and entertain his fans. Sporting convincing prosthetics, dazzling costumes and considerable charm, Wayland Pickard performs his impersonation with ease, nailing Liberace’s signature wink and Wisconsin accent. He hits the piano with flair, accenting the flourishes and flowing arpeggios that defined Liberace’s musical style. In between numbers, he keeps up a light comedic rapport with the audience.

Forever Young

Rod Stewart’s energetic performance may win him a permanent gig at Caesars

“Whatever it is, he’s still got it.” My concert companion said with an ear-to-ear grin after hearing Rod Stewart’s opening song, “Love Train.” The enthusiastic crowd seemed to agree. And if her opinion is any indication—she is the ideal demographic by the way, a Baby Boomer who saw him perform in the ’70s—then we can expect Stewart’s stint to turn into something more.sta

Pick Me, Lior!

Israeli mentalist Lior Suchard brings the whole audience in on the act

Lior Suchard’s Supernatural Entertainment is a solid little magic show. Strolling onstage in jeans, an untucked shirt and loose sport coat, he worked the crowd in the pleasantly intimate Lounge at the Palms, managing his misdirection well and directly engaging almost every willing audience member with light, funny patter and some pretty cool trickery.
