Opening This Weekend: Seth Rogen Gets Dirty, Chace Crawford Gets Scary

The country might be in the midst of the worst recession in ages, but things are looking positively Clintonian at the box office. Last weekend High School Musical 3 and Saw V grossed a combined $73 million. Yowsers! While there are only three wide releases coming to theaters this weekend (one being Changeling, which opened here in New York last week), expect the surge to continue. Here's a handy guide to the weekends new releases.

The Haunting of Molly Hartley

What's the story: Just in time for Halloween comes the tale of a teenage girl who finds out that her parents sold her soul to the Devil ... and he's coming to collect when she turns 18. Cue the scary music! In the '90s, these types of movies used to star WB icons like Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes and Barry Watson. The Haunting of Molly Hartley (great title, incidentally) taps into the current CW lineup to fill out its C-list cast. Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford (Nate!) brings his perfectly tussled bangs to the big screen, joining 90210's AnnaLynne McCord (What's-her-face!) and Jessica Lowndes (That one!). Presumably, they all die gruesome deaths. If you want some scares this weekend, you'd probably be better off staying home and watching the horror movie marathon on TCM.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

What's the story: The true story of a mother fighting back against a corrupt Los Angeles Police Department in the quest to find her son during the 1930s. Oh. Wrong movie. Zack and Miri Make a Porno is about Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) making a porno. The reviews for Kevin Smith's latest have been mostly positive, highlighting the palpable charm of Ms. Banks and a scene-stealing performance from The Office's Craig Robinson. We've had our problems with the whole idea of Mr. Smith shamelessly attempting to cash in on the Judd Apatow Empire, but we have to give the guy some credit. Between the countless TV spots and interviews with the cast, the marketing push for this film has been so completely over the top, that the idea of seeing Zack and Miri has certainly grown on us. Eww. Get your mind out of the gutter.
