New Gun Control Legislation Gains Momentum in House

Long Island congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy announced today that her campaign to ban high capacity ammunition magazines is gaining steam.

"The nation is recognizing that these devices facilitate mass carnage and their availability is a threat to public safety," said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy. "We can save lives and reduce injuries by restricting access to high-capacity magazines once again."

Since introducing HR308 a month ago, McCarthy has more than doubled the number of cosponsors for her bill, from 42 to 90.  According to a press release, McCarthy has implemented a two-tier plan to continue to gain support and momentum. As well as personally asking other house representatives to support the bill, she has also enlisted anti-gun advocates to initiate grassroots efforts on the bill's behalf.

"Every day another Congress member, another editorial board, another organization and another American fed up with gun violence is standing up to support a ban on high-capacity magazines," said Rep. McCarthy.

This isn't the first ant-gun legislation that has popped up after the Arizona shooting.

Days after the attack, 3rd district Rep. Peter King proposed a bill that would make it illegal for someone to carry a gun with 1,000 feet of federal officials. King has previously said he would support McCarthy's bill.
