Dainja’s His Name

Getting schooled by Vegas’ (role) model DJ

He’s as intelligent, composed and straight-edged as they come. But don’t let the bookish demeanor of DJ Dainjazone (a.k.a. Joseph Hampel) fool you. At just 27, this former baseball player, current substitute teacher and aspiring model has the party rock on lock.

Ashley Greene drags Joe Jonas to a twee Candy Land party

Imagine, for a moment, you’re a precocious teenage girl. This will be easier if you’re one of our less savory readers with proclivities we’d rather not hear about. But what could possibly be more in your wheelhouse of things you obsessed about over the last three years than Twilight, the Jonas Brothers or candy? Nothing. The answer is “nothing.” (Except for those newly mourned Bieber bangs.) Ashley Greene (yes, we know, it’s not the same as if it was Kristen Stewart in this scenario, but roll with us) was at Pure for her 24th birthday, bringing boyfriend Joe Jonas for her Candy Land-themed party.

Black Keys, The Prodigy hang at Cosmo; Tony Parker back in town for Baller's Ball at Lavo

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the Black Keys were spotted at Marquee after their Feb. 19 show at Cosmopolitan to see Above & Beyond debut their DJ residency, as were the guys from The Prodigy after they got done opening for Linkin Park at MGM Grand Garden Arena. It marks the first time 1998 and 2006 have gotten together and hung out in the same room like that.

Mane Men

Chord Overstreet doesn’t even have regular hair on the back of his head. His bangs start at the bottom of his neck, go all the way over his skull and end somewhere just north of his nose. There’s a mad scientist somewhere abandoning his efforts to genetically splice together a sheep dog, a varsity football player and a bottle of Paul Mitchell shampoo because Chord Overstreet already exists, and there’s no point to pushing that experiment forward.

And the winner is … Las Vegas!

Proving yet again that Mel Brooks was on to something—indeed, it is good to be the king—the categories for the 2011 Nightclub & Bar Awards reflect Las Vegas’ dominance of the nightlife scene nationally. So complete has been our rule over the annual awards lineup that this year, Las Vegas has been elevated to a category unto itself.

Jersey Shore even has pull in the NFL

In the pantheon of unlikely buddies, there are giants who walk among us. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. Sylvester Stallone and his mom, who will shoot lest you knock off whatever it is you’re doing. Turner and Hooch. Add one more to the roster: Aaron Rodgers and DJ Pauly D. The Super Bowl MVP, and the “P” in the more tanning-centric MVP.

Lavo is the toast of two towns—but it all began in Vegas

If you’re lucky, what happens here stays here. But what happens here is rarely happening for the first time. We’ve been the nightlife capital of the world for decades, for example, but much of our fame arrived already famous: Ghostbar had success in Chicago before coming to Vegas; Tao restaurant and Marquee nightclub launched in New York before venturing west; and Eva Longoria’s Beso has a sister spot and nightclub in Hollywood. Still, a new crop of Vegas exports seems to indicate a changing of the tides, and Lavo appears to be the one that’s having the most gravitational pull in a major outside market.

• The DJ roll call just keeps getting longer. LAX is adding a residency of its own with Sharam starting his monthly residency there Feb. 23. It will be called Destination Sharam, presumably because Destination Tiësto would have been too confusing.

Perpetual sidekick Jonah Hill leads own pack into town

Jonah Hill brought his friends into town for his annual trip to Vegas. We assume this means Judd Apatow doesn’t have much going on right now and could spare Hill for a weekend. Hill and his group of eight buddies, which includes son-of-Fonzie Max Winkler, spent Feb. 11 at Marquee where they grooved out to DJ Chuckie.
