CURRENT CINEMA
Of Gods and Men

Of Gods and Men premiered at Cannes last May; the audience wept, and director Xavier Beauvois (Le Petit Lieutenant) went home with a Grand Jury prize.

The film—which follows a group of French monks into the very middle of a North African civil war—is loosely based on a true story (albeit one that never really registered in the American press). It builds slowly but never bores, raises some profound questions about faith, fear, and charity, and manages to say a few new things about courage. It’s also quite beautiful, and one of the concluding scenes—a Last Supper of sorts—is breathtaking. Of Gods and Men opens in the U.S. today, in limited release.
