Ballet Without the Theater

Beyond Words and Text brings stories to life while allowing fans a peek behind the scenes

As a lover of dance, I’m often left wanting to know more about the creative process behind a great artistic performance. Fortunately, Nevada Ballet Theatre created a learning opportunity by opening its rehearsal space to the public for a series of performances called Beyond Words and Text: The Studio Series.

A Clog in the Machine

Insurgo Theater’s tale of female empowerment gets caught in a bad script

Woman is trapped in loveless marriage. Woman feels suffocated by life. Woman goes mad and kills husband. Woman is put on trial. Woman is sentenced to death. It’s a pretty straightforward plot, one that’s inspired by the real-life murder committed by Ruth Snyder in 1927. However, Insurgo Theater’s Machinal makes it all convoluted.

A Man, a Voice and a Handful of Felt

With two years under his belt and a new puppet, Terry Fator continues his run at The Mirage

As the second anniversary celebration of Terry Fator: Ventriloquism in Concert reached its midway point on March 18, Terry Fator put down his puppets to sing his original song “Horses in Heaven,” about a young boy with cancer. It was a rare solemn moment in an evening dedicated to straightforward gags involving handheld people made of felt. The America’s Got Talent winner seemed to enjoy the solo spotlight, almost as if he was trying to prove that he was a legitimate singer who didn’t need to rely on plushy partners.

Wonderful Wanda

Sykes might be a jack-of-all-stages, but she’s returning to her stand-up roots

Since coming up in the mid-’90s, Wanda Sykes has ranged far and wide. She’s been on TV and in movies, was an Emmy-nominated television writer, a talk-show host, a Crank Yankers puppet and, recently, played Miss Hannigan in a run of Annie. Really, doesn’t everyone want to terrorize Depression-era orphans just once in their career? Yet the constant has always been stand-up. In 2009, she scored an HBO special with I’ma Be Me. After Fox canceled The Wanda Sykes Show last year, the comedian went back on the road with an eye on putting together another hour. She appears March 11-12 at The Mirage’s Terry Fator Theater.

One Month’s Rent

Long-running Broadway show spends March at Ovation

When asked to describe the upcoming revival of Rent at Green Valley Ranch, the show’s producer, Andrew Wright, as you might expect, quickly launched into superlatives. The new show is “insane, absolutely amazing” and will “blow the roof off Ovation,” the showroom at Green Valley Ranch.

Jabba How?

Learning the meaning of break dance from the JabbaWockeeZ workshop

With a mix of anxiousness and excitement, I walked into UNLV’s Student Wellness and Recreation Center on Feb. 19 to take part in the first installment of The Exchange, a monthly dance workshop taught by the JabbaWockeeZ. Although I’ve been taking dance classes my whole life, I have little experience with hip-hop and definitely no idea what it takes to dance like the hip-hop crew who rose to fame as the Season 1 winners of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Would I be able to keep up with intricate movements and BBoy techniques that the JabbaWockeeZ have become known for, or would I make a complete fool of myself?

Showgirl School

X Burlesque University left one student waiting for the advanced course

It wasn’t until I moved to Las Vegas with its bounty of dancers that I added “learn to burlesque dance” to my bucket list. The opportunity came to cross it off came when I heard about X Burlesque University. Its 75-minute class, from the producers of X Burlesque at the Flamingo, consisted of makeup application training, a take-home makeup kit, a professional photograph and a lesson in burlesque dance moves.

Father of Filth

Gilbert Gottfried returns to the Hilton’s Icons of Comedy

Gilbert Gottfried treats every question like a surprise. He pauses before he half-murmurs answers amid sidelong glances. He seems, strangely, vulnerable. It’s not what you’d expect from the 55-year-old comedian who carved an identity out of nasal honking, uncomfortable squinting and awkward shifting. It isn’t until the conversation takes a self-deprecating turn—which it does, frequently—that he sounds at ease. “Out here [my audience] is usually people who couldn’t get tickets to another show,” he says. “That’s the feeling I always get in Vegas.”
