Mad Men is still mired in renewal talks between network AMC and production company Lionsgate (show creator Matthew Weiner, pictured at right, has indicated it may never return), and fans are getting restless. So, too, actors! As delays run on indefinitely, it's unclear to what degree the stars of the show should be seeking new opportunities--Mad Men could, after all, commence filming again at any moment!... MORE >
One could have assumed Lil' Kim wasn't getting good guidance even before her latest move: yesterday she released a mixtape entitled Black Friday, a takeoff on Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday with a cover depicting Minaj decapitated (click for the image). Minaj has often criticized Kim (in the song "Roman's Revenge," Minaj rhymed "Yeah, I said it, has-been / Hang it up, flatscreen"), but this is a striking... MORE >
The New York Television Festival is a September gathering not for established artists, like the Cannes Film Festival, but for young renegades, like Sundance (another difference: it's about TV). The festival announced today its annual search for new television writers with the Fox-sponsored contest to submit a pilot script. This contest, in its fourth year, offers its winner a $25,000 development deal from the network (entrants must not have prior commitments to any other... MORE >
Lady Gaga's Monster Ball Tour is being transmitted to the masses. HBO's announced that they're taping a concert special over the course of her February 21 and 22 Madison Square Garden shows, and that she's "creating unique new elements" for the TV special. ABC announced today that David Muir is to anchor their weekend World News broadcasts. The youthful Muir, who recently returned from Cairo, is something of an ABC lifer, having reported for World News with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America, 20/20, and Nightline. Sounds like Muir has a good working relationship with the reportedly hard-to-love ABC News President Ben Sherwood! ddaddario@observer.com ::... MORE >
Grammy weekend is a nexus for music news from acts besides the big winners--Lady Gaga chose Friday to drop her new single, and now even "Born This Way" may be overshadowed by British rockers born that way. Radiohead continues to shun traditional music labels, as they have announced their next album The King of Limbs will be self-distributed on Saturday.... MORE >
Last night's Grammys--which the Observer liveblogged!--were dominated by Nashville (Lady Antebellum) and, surprisingly, Montreal (the Arcade Fire), but the pre-show was all Manhattan, as Anderson Cooper interviewed Lady Gaga for 60 Minutes. The interview covered very familiar ground: Gaga wore raw meat! She loves fame, and pursues it assiduously! She likes to be called "Gaga"!... MORE >
On Saturday night at the Columbia Club on West 43rd Street--really just a warren carved out of the Princeton Club, but who's keeping score?--Arianna Huffington was making a lot of promises.
