• The Vimeo

From the beginning, Vimeo was created by filmmakers and video creators who wanted to share their creative work, along with intimate personal moments of their everyday life. As time went on, like-minded people came to the site and built a community of positive, encouraging individuals with a wide range of video interests. We hope that you feel inspired to show us both your creative side as well as your friendly side.

  • Uploading

Vimeo exists to provide you with a space to showcase your creativity and share your life. As such, we do not allow you to upload videos that are commercial in nature or videos that you did not make yourself. See the Uploading Guidelines below for more details.

  • Speech

The Internet is a wonderful place, but we have all noticed that it can also provide people with the means to insult and harass others without taking the full responsibility for their words. A community that allows that type of behavior will quickly decay, so we insist that while you are on Vimeo you respect the people you encounter and their videos. You are free to disagree, but you are not free to attack people simply for your amusement. If you wouldn't say it to someone's face, don't say it on Vimeo. If you cannot conduct yourself in a respectful manner, you will be removed.

  • Community

Vimeo is not a sea of eyeballs that you must trick into increasing your view count. It is a vibrant community of intelligent and creative people. We strongly encourage you to find people who share your interests and connect with them here. The more you interact with the community, the more interest in your work there will be. Get involved and you will enjoy the rewarding experience that Vimeo can provide.

Uploading Guidelines

  • You must have all necessary permissions to upload the video.

    • You must own or have the right to upload the video.
    • If the video contains third party content (such as video, music, or images), you must have the right to use that content.
    • Your video must not infringe third party copyrights or other intellectual property.
  • You must have created the video or closely participated in its creation.

    • Having the right to upload a video is different from having created the video. For example, you may not upload public domain videos that were created by others.
    • Directors, DPs, editors, musicians, graphic effects artists, and actors may upload videos to which they have contributed significantly.
    • Users who upload professional-quality content should list their role and involvement in the video description to avoid accidental deletion.
    • EXCEPTION: Vimeo PRO users may upload videos that they did not create so long as they comply with the Vimeo Pro Guidelines.
  • Your video must not be intended for commercial use.

    • You may not upload commercials, infomercials, demos, walkthroughs, or any videos that sell or promote a product or service.
    • You may not upload videos containing advertisements (e.g., pre-roll ads, post-roll ads, overlay ads, or links) without Vimeo's prior written consent.
    • You may not use Vimeo for your business's video hosting needs unless you are a Vimeo PRO user. See Vimeo Pro Guidelines for more details.
    • Because Vimeo supports the creative arts, small scale production companies, non-profits, and artists may show or promote their works.
    • EXCEPTION: Vimeo PRO users may upload commercial videos and use the Vimeo Service for their business hosting needs as long as they comply with the Vimeo Pro Guidelines.
  • Your video must comply with all of our other content restrictions.

You may NOT upload videos that:

    • You found on the Internet or elsewhere.
    • Are compilations of TV programs or movies.
    • Are "fan vids."
    • Are gameplay videos. However, game developers may post videos showing development. Machinima videos are acceptable so long as there is a story.
    • Contain sexually explicit content or pornography. However, non-sexual nudity is permitted.
    • Contain hateful, defamatory, or discriminatory content or incite hatred against any individual or group.
    • Depict unlawful acts or extreme violence.
    • Depict animal cruelty or extreme violence towards animals.
