Family-Oriented Adventure

A type of adventure aimed at the kids demographic and/or suitable for family viewing. These films usually involve a child, adolescent, or family that gets involved in a fight against the elements of nature or caught up in intrigue; yet any violence or harm inherent in adventure films is minimal, and there is consistently a happy ending to these stories. The blueprint for these films can be found in the Disney film The Swiss Family Robinson, in which a shipwrecked family sets up their own personal paradise on a South Sea island while fighting off nature and other enemies. Similar variations on the theme followed, with films like The Sea Gypsies and Adventures of the Wilderness Family placing a close-knit family in danger only to see them triumph over adversity. Other adventure-themed kids popped up in the 1980s and 1990s, as the larger video market for family-oriented films encouraged filmmakers to meet the demand.
